Heart Attack Claims

NEW YORK la-Walter (Rabbit)
Maranviile. rated as one of the
greatest fielding shortstops in base
ball history and a menuer of the
19H "miracle" Boston Braves,
died last night of a heart attack.
He was 61.
Death came to the little man,
who started his major league ca
reer with the Boston Braves in
1911 and wound up with the same
club in 1935. at his home In the
noodside section of New York.
Burial will be at Springfield,
Mass. He is survived by his widow
Hclene and a daughter, Mrs. Peter
McGuinis of Rocheser, N.,Y.
In between the times he played
with the Braves, he was a member
of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chirago J
Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers and the
St. Louis Cardinals, And he man
aged the Cubs briefly during the
1925 season and piloted the Braves,
also for a short period, in 1929.
After breaking a leg In a 1934
spring exhibition game with the
New York Yankees, the Rabbit
wound up his major league career
the following year. But before
bowing out of baseball altogether
he took a fling at managing El-

burn came from behind In the
last minute of the regular
game to tie it all 4-141 on bas
kets by Royce Norris and Bob
Higgins. Larry Gorman and
Jim Zauner each hit a basket
for Mt. Angel In the overtime
and the Preps stalled the last
14 minutes.
Gorman, a 5-10 guard, ac
counted for nine points In the
fourth quarter and overtime
to help Mt. Angel overcome a
six-point third-quarter deficit
and go ahead before Woodburn
tied it to require the extra ses
sion. Jerry Plank of Wood-
burn was game high scorer
with 16. Gorman and Tobby
Frey posted 14 each for Mt.
Angel.

Pirates defeated the Falls City
Mountaineers for the second
time, M-M, in a basketball game
here last night. Perrydale had
won their season's opening game
against the Mountaineers, 51-38.
The Pirates, coached by Don
Miller, led at all the quarter
stops: 1M alter one stanza, 26-22
at the half; and 41-33 after three
cantos.
Sam Stewart and Benny Rem
pel again led Perrydale to vic
tory. Stewart scored 21 and Rem
pel counted for 14. Stan Poe was
