A check for $6000 is being presented Charles H. Heltzel,
president of Salem Memorial Hospital Board of Directors,
by Mrs. E. F. Kirkwood, Hospital Auxiliary treasurer.
The check is the major part of the proceeds of the recent
"High Fever Follies" sponsored by the auxiliary. The
money will be used to purchase a revolutionary cen
tralized food service for the hospital, known as "Meals

The delegates listened to
two addresses during the fore
noon concerning personnel
problems. One of the speak
ers was Frank Beach, vice
president of the U.S. National
Bank of Portland who discuss
ed "Personnel Policies and
Procedures in Industry." He
was followed by Dr. William
R. Odell, professor of educa
tion, Stanford University, who
approached the personnel
problem from the ingle of the
school administration.
A number of discussion
groups were formed following
the two general talks. Chair
men of these groups Included
Wallace McCrae, superinten
dent of the Pendleton schools;
Henry Tetz, superintendent of
the Monmouth-Independence
schools; Don J. Campbell, su
perintendent of Parkrose; Guy
Shellenberge: of the Marsh

French Airforce

with a major supply problem.
The rebel advance cut the Me
kong River supply line as well
as road routes to the Laos gov
ernment seat of Vientiane. The
capital and other strategic
towns in the northern part of
the kingdom now must be sup
plied by air.
The Mt. Wilson area fire
started Sunday from undeter
mined origin. Ashes fell as
far away as downtown Los An
geles and Hollywood.
The fire fingers moved
quickly up Mt. Wilson and
nearby peaks.
Fire and high winds destroy
ed the telephone and power
lines in the Mt. Baldy and San
Antonio Canyon areas. Roads
were blocked and sightseers
told to stay out.
Between 600 and 1,000 men
with more than 60 pieces of
equipment manned the fire
lines in the tricky terrain. For
estry officials and police order
ed residents of Monrovia can
yon. Hidden Canyon and the
Gold Hill section on Monrovia's
outskirts, Santa Anita Canyon
and some houses in Arcadia to
evacuate for safety.

Polytechnic school in Portland

1926 to 1932. A year prior to
that he owned and operated a

State college since 1946 he has
been director of industrial re
search and chairman of the
mechanical engineering d e -parement.
He has done re

administration which he will

He was born in Kent, Wash..

from Washington State in 1916
with a degree of bachelor of
science and obtained his mas
ter's degree then in 1926.
