American are living today
in a mechanized age, and
strengthening the economic
position of commerce, In all
communities, in the use of
business machines. These mod
em machine are time-saver
and augment the accuracy of
accounting, communi cation
and other factor which make
for a sound economy. The
Roen Typewriter Exchange,
1436 Court street, in Salem, ha
been supplying these business
machines for 27 year. The
business has grown and ex
panded, along with the out
standing growth that has been
experienced by the Capital
! city of Oregon. The store of the
i Roen Typewriter Exchange has
: been located on Court street
from the day of its founding.
I Due to the fine patronage ac
corded it, from the very be
I ginning and the efficient serv
ice that has been maintained,
j this commercial firm has out
, grown its location four times.
Today it is known as the
"friendly store."
Typewriters, adding ma
chines, cash registers, calcula
tors, duplicating and address-
ing machines and, all makes of
inew and used portable type
; writers are supplied by the
Roen Typewriter Exchange.
I The availability of these ma
chines is augmented by office
furniture such as desks, chairs.
Steel Age filing cases, Mellnk
safes in all sizes, Including
floor safes and, other needed
office equipment.
, Service Is Paramount
I It has long been known that
any machine is only as good as
the service behind it. Thos.
Roen has always been aware
of the fact of this statement
and, since he first engaged in
the office machine business.
; back in Superior, Wise., serv
ice has been a paramount pol-
' icy behind every machine sold.
I For some 20 years the Roens
I were engaged in the office ma
chine business in the Wiscon
sin city. The family came into
the west and located in Salem
in 1826 and, established the
Roen Typewriter Exchange on
Court treet. It was first lo
cated In much smaller store
space than Is maintained today
and its growth and good so
ceptance is accredited not only
, to the supplying of good ma
i chines but, the efficient senr
ice behind each machine sold,
i The store is well depart
mentalized with the various
j machines attractively display
: ed, each to its own depart
ment. This makes it compara
; tively easy for the customer to
select the machine in which
he is interested.
A service department Is
maintained in a large room I
directly behind the sales and
display room. This department
under the supervision of
Thos. Roen, Jr., better known
to the trade and his friends as
"Bud." Bud has carefully
planned and installed labor
saving equipment and work
benches in the service shop.
The shop is well lighted and
ventilated which creates an
environment conducive of
good work. Bud Roen was
raised, in an atmosphere of
business machines and has
been closely Identified with the
business all of his life, with
the exception of four years that
were spent with the US. air

functions as a happy family. '
Mrs. c w. luiaays) Pickens,
is office secretary and in the
word of her father, Thos.
Roen, "knows more about the
intimate feature of the busi
ness than anyone else connect
ed with It." Gladys Pickens has
charge of all the office account
ing, reports, bookkeeping and
general office details. She lit
erally grew up in the business
which, no doubt, has contrib
uted much to her efficiency as
office secretary.
Chet Pickens is sales mana
ger and has been identified
with the firm for 15 years.
Paul Bale, salesman, devotes
much of his time to contacting
the office personnel in the
state house and supplying of
fice machines when they are
needed. He also act a city
salesman and devotes some of
hi time in the (tore.
Experienced Mechanic
Jame (Jim) Mason, has
been a mechanic in the serv
ice department for some ten
years. He 1 familiar with all
of the technical and mechani
cal feature of business ma
chines and, there is no ma
chine in need of repair that
cannot be put back into good
operation condition by Jim
Mason if the machine Itself
warrants it. Working along
with Jim Mason, in the repair
department, is Lee Heffron.
Lee has had 30 years experi
ence a a typewriter and busi
ness machine mechanic.
The Roen Typewriter Ex
change serves as a dealer for
the R. C. Allen business ma
chines, along with other na
tionally known office equip
ment. The success of the Roen
Typewriter Exchange and, the
arrangements of the store at
458 Court street gained the
recognition of the R. C. Allen
Business Machines Inc. In their
house-organ, "Keyboard," pub
lished in March 1893, two fuU
pages were devoted to an ar
ticle, along with pictures, out
lining the fine record that has
been established by the Roen
Typewriter Exchange in Sa
lem. This article, in part, said:
Mr. Roen has been adhering to
a strict policy of good service
to his customers In Salem since
1826. The staff of the Roen
Typewriter Exchange reflects
an atmosphere of courtesy and 1
friendliness which has profit
ably resulted in a reference to
Roen's as the "friendly store."
Pictures were shown of both
interior and exterior of the
store and of the suburban
trucks which are used for serv
ing customers located In Mar
ion. Polk, Linn counties as
well as occasional service calls
into Yamhill and Clackamas
counties. These modern service
trucks, used to transport ma
chines from the commercial
centers in the region, to the
repair department and, return
them when they are back in
good operating condition.
