Ortro Jones Talks on Pool System : Increasing costs ol higher ed ucUon make it important lor Oregon to take advantage of the new system under which Western itatei pool their grad uate school resources. Dr. Wil liam C. Jones, Eugene, exec utive director of the Western Commission for Higher Edu cation, said here Friday. Dr. Jones spoke to 50 admin istrators of state and private colleges and public officials. Eight states now are in the program, under which the states open up their graduate . schools to students from the other states. They are Aritona, New Mexico, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado. "It is necessary," Jones said, "for each state to develop those graduate schools for which it possesses advantages, and to stay out of the fields in which other states have advantages." Jones said the meeting was a "trial balloon," being the first of several meetings to be held in each state in the com pact. Other speakers included Chancellor Charles D. Byrne of the State System of Higher Education; Dean F. L. Gilfillan of Oregon State College; and State Sen. Dean H. Walker, In dependence. New Officers tor 1954 At a recent election the new officers for 1954 were elected to serve the Salem Chamber of Commerce. William H. Ham mond, identified with the Un ion Security company, was chosen as president with Rus sell E. Pratt, owner of the Capital City Transfer company, retiring president. Kenneth C. Potts, insurance, was elected first vice president with Miss Hattle Bratzel, attorney, as sec ond vice president. Junior Eck' ley, Blue Lake Cannery, was elected secretary and Joseph B. Felton, circuit judge, will be treasurer. Clay Cochran, who has serv ed efficiently as manager of the Salem Chamber of Com merce since April, 1842, was re-elected as the manager. Mr. Cochran came to Salem from CorvalllJ where he had served as manager of the Corvallii Chamber of oCmmerce for nine years. The new board of directors consists of Raymond Allen, E. E. Batterman, Elmer Berg. Don Doerfler, A. H. Flicker, Rex Gibson, Rex Hartley, Bernard Mainwaring, Claude Miller, Louis Neuman. Lee Ohmart, Sam Orcutt, George Paulus, Robert K. Powell, Wesley E. Stewart, Jr., and Wendell Webb. In addition to Clay Cochran as the manager of the Salem Chamber of Commerce, an ef ficient staff consists of J. R. Dudley, executive manager of the Industrial Council; G. Ira Moore, assistant manager; Mrs. Vcrna Rowe, receptionist; Miss Margaret Lovell, office secre tary; Mrs. Lois Cromer, Indus trial secretary, and Robert E. Gangware, bulletin editor. The Salem Chamber of Com merce lunctions effectively through a list of committees. The heads of these committees and the members are chosen from the ranks of the chamber members as they are acquaint-' ed and adapted to function with the committee for which they have been chosen. Jlntle Bells Martin Luther Film Coming The Capitol theater an nounced today that the widely heralded film, "Martin Lu ther," will start limited en gagement January IT in Salem. The Salem Ministerial asso ciation approved the showing at a recent meeting, and is urging all Salem midenta to see the film. A commltte under the general chairmanship of Rev. John L. Gamble of St. Mark's Lutheran church, is being formed to acquaint the residents of the Willamette valley of the playing time of the film at the theater. The film depists the later life and background of Martin Luthern, and some of the causes that led to his famous act of nailing his S3 thesis to the church door in Wittenburg. His teachings and writings led to the Reformation. The film is based on old Protestant and Catholic sources, and leans heavily on historic documents for its dialogue. For its Salem engagement all the Protestant churches, through the Salem Ministerial association, will play an ac Uve part in aiding the publicity and promotion of the film Special discount tickets will be given to each church, so that members of the eongreea tions can sec the film at prices lower than regular box office prices lower than regular box office prices established for the picture.
