SOUND BEHIND '": '. - f,.'!" w if . Vi ?'. :: ' ' - . - 4'." Oroaoa BJshar Bdaoatlaa aratom) It was wrong to attempt to ax plain It. The opposite theory is that the entire account is a 'pious myth" and has no foundation in fact The inter mediate theorist attempt to explain It as an unusual but natural ' phenomenon. They say It might have been the planet Venus at its best: the spectacular grouping of Jupi ter, Saturn, and Mars In 6 B.C., dr th still brighter combina tion of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus in 1 B.C. Or possi bly it was the periodic return of Halley's comet at about that time, or a brilliant nova (new star) such as at times flares up into great brilliance where no star was known before. . Last year we had both Jupi ter and Venus as glorious Christmas stars. This year Jupiter does th honors alone but nobly. As oon as the evening sky la darkened, this brilliant planet can be aeen a little above the horizen alight ly north of eait. Lata in th evening this old "king of th gods" Is almost In tha zenith. Then 1 on group in to starry skif which seems most fitting to consider at Christmas Urn. This Is th astcrlsm known as tha Northern Cross. We hear' a great deal about the famed Southern Cross which can b seen well only by go ing considerably south of the United States. While it con tains mora bright stars than our own Northern Cross, it is much smaller and less fitted In hip for a Christmas symbol. Let, us try to point out th Northern Cross. At about a p.m., standard time, look some what above th horizon la th northwest. A very bright star. Vega, la twinkling there. This if not th on ws are concerned with, but are simply using It as a guide. Considerably high er, there is another bright star, but not so brilliant as Vega. This is Deneb at tha head of th Northern Cross. Below Deneb not a hori zontal line of three stars, all of about the same brightness. The line is almost straight, but not exactly. This forms the cross arm of our celestial figure. Now trace downward from the middle star of this line through some dim stars to the foot of the cross. If the air ia very clear the beautiful cross will stand out distinctly. It always stsnds upright abov th west northwestern horizon at this hour at Christmas time. Vocal Groups to Sing at Woodburn Wood burn The vocal music depsrtment of Wood burn high school will present the annual Christmas program Tuesday, Dee. 22, at a p.m. In the high school gymnasium. Thre vocal groups will be featured, th newly formed "Girl's CI Club," th "Wood burn High Schol Chorus," and 'The Chorallers." The choruses will be assisted by the high school bsnd, directed by E. Donsld Jessup, and by a choral reading group directed by Miss Roberta Schmalz. This yesr the Christmss story will be told through a Ariel of tablesux which are to be explained by the choral readers and the various chor uses. Miss Harriet Nlslc, vocal music supervisor, will direct the entire production. The pub lic is invited to attend. School i will be dismissed at 3 4J n m. I Dec. 21 and return Jan. 4.
