Ernest H. Kelly
Albany The funeral for
Ernest Henry Kelly, 56, of
Scio, who died at his home at
Scio of heart disease Tuesday,
was held Friday at the Fisher
Funeral home. Burial waa In
the Willamette Memorial park.
Mr. Kelly was native of
Crook county and grew up in
Linn county, and had lived in
Newport, Cathlamet. Wash..
returning to Oregon and living
at Burns where be was trans
ferred by a power company by
wnicn ne was employed. .
The last six years he had
lived in Salem, where he was
with the department of veter
ans affairs, moving to Scio a
month ago.
He served with the U. S.
navy during World War II.
In 1919, at Albany, he mar
ried Wynona Mespelt, who sur
vives as do three children.

Portland hospital, according to
word received here.
Mrs. Flux is survived by two
sons, Leon of Salem and Her
bert of Marysville. Calif, and a
daughter, Mrs. Wesley Nist,
Pallas route three. Her hus
band died In January, 1953.
Services will be held In the
Howell-Edwards mortuary in
Salem Tuesday, December 22,
at 1:30 p.m., with a Christian
Science reader officiating. In
terment will be in Belcrest
Memorial park, Salem.

former resident of Silverton for
1 many years, James Johnson, 76,
at the Ekman Funeral Home
Memorial chapel. Elder R. C.
Schaffner of Salem officiated
and burial was in the Silver
ton cemetery.
' Mr. Johnson was born in
Minnesota Aug. 6, 1ST?. He wu
in the plumbing business in
Silverton 14 years and moved
to Milwaukie 10 years ago. He
died Monday evening at a Sa
lem hospital.
Surviving are the widow
Tena, two sons and a daughter,
Edward of Pittsburg, Calif.
Lynn, Oregon City, and Nila
Wise, Edmonds, Wash.; six
grandchildren, one brother, N

An estimated 100 more toys have been added to the
Salem Exchange club's Toys for Kids drive by members
of the First National Bank Employees' club, Mrs. Edlyn
Laudahl (left) and Mrs. Patricia Mock of the bank group

man Frank Ward. The toys are being donated by both
employees and customers of the bank. More contributions
will be welcomed until next Wednesday, Mrs. Laudahl,
chairman of the bank toy campaign, said. Toys should be
new or in good condition and may be placed under the
large tree in the bank lobby. Exchange ciub expects to
have some 800 toys to turn over to Salvation Army for
gifts to under-privileged children in Salem area.

reported late Thursday by the
ngricuuure Department.
Cotton ranked second in
value with a crop listed as
worth just over three billion
dollars.
Well over the two billion
dollar mark were wheat and
hay. Tabocco and- commercial
vegetables were valued at more
than one billion dollars each.
The crop values were ob
tained by multiplying the' esti
mated 1993 production by the
estimated average prices re
ceived by farmers during the
year.
The actual cash income to
farmers was well belsw this
'value of production" for such
crops as corn and other grains
fed or to be fed to livestock
on the farms.
The Federal Crop Reporting
Board reported that this year's
harvest, despite widespread
drought, Just about equalled
that of 1952, which was the
second largest in history.
The bumper yields were at
tributed to record and above
average harvests per acre.
Air Service
Normal Again
Air lines service Into Sa
lem, which was disturbed ear
lier this week by fog in the
northwest area, was back to
normal Friday, with all flights
on schedule.
j The fog had lifted ennnh
by Thursday afternoon for
southbound flight 178, stopping
here at 4:25 p.m., to operate
and since that time all flights
making Salem stops have been
operating.
Sunday evening was the first
time the fog bothered the air
traffic. That day the evening
northbound and the evening
southbound flights were can
celled. The early morning
flight, originating in Medford
stopped here at 8:30 a.m. and
three afternoon and evening
flights were cancelled Monday
because of the weather.
No flights operated into Sa
lem Tuesday and only two
flights, southbound 178, stop
ping here at 4:25 p.m., and
nothbound flight 175, which
lands here at 8:50 p.m., oper
ated on Wednesday.

hood of Railroad Trainmen to
day became the first major un
ion to discard the "escalator"
clause labor contract after a
trial of also three years.
The brotherhood, which rep
resents 133,000 employes of
the nation's railroads, last night
announced it had accepted a
five cent hourly wage increase
and agreed to drop the cost of
living escalator clause.
The agreement with the car
riers represented a drastic re
duction in the trainmen's orig
inal demand for a 37 Vi cent an
hour Increase.
Other 'operating" or service
brotherhoods have made almost
identical demands, and negotia
tions between them and the
railroads were still underway.
The trainmen had worked
under the cost of living clause
since April, 1951, and had re
ceived a total of 13 cents an
hour in increases as tiie gov
ernment cost index spiraled
uuward.
