Casanova Lauds Vikings
At Final Grid Banquet
Orefon'f coach Len Cau-
nova put the final touch to Sa
lem high tchool'i football team
by tagging it but night ai "one
of the finest organized and
eharpeit high echool teame I
ever aaw In Oregon."
Caianova, who vowed he
had not laid that at any other
banquet, ipoke at an informal
dinner given the 19S3 Viklngi
by the Salem student body at
the high school cafeteria. There
were 68 players, coaches, fath
ers, administrators and guests
present.
Citing the Lebanon game,
won by Salem 42-7, Casanova
noted tne "poise and execution
of plays" of the Vikings and
added that "your actions off as
well as on the field contributed
to your success."
Beat In 29 Years
Other tributes came from
Principal E. A. Carleton, Vice
Principal Gurnee Flesher, Di
rectors of Athletics Vera Gil
more, who was master of cere
monies, and from the coaches.
Flesher, who said he prob
ably has seen more Salem high
garnet than anyone else, de
clarer: "since 1824 I never
aaw a better team and never
was prouder of one." He said
he had not received a single
complaint against a player and
that all had average or above
average grades.
Carleton testified that the
team "made me immensely
proud of you." Gilmore gave
credit to pre-game prepara
tions of George Grant, a fac
ulty member who handled bus
iness details, and work
had it." he told the Vikings. In
his 23 years of coaching, he
added, "I never wanted an
alibi.'
(S) Loyalty to self, team
mates, coaches, school and com
munity.
The Oregon coach showed
movies of the Oregon-South
ern California game In Port
land, won by the Ducks in a
major upset, 13-7.
Also introduced were sports
editors Al Lightner and A. C.
Jones and sportcaster Chuck
Boice.

Height Problem
For OCEirh
2 Games Coming
Monmouth The biggest
headache teen by Coach Bob
Livingston this week-end Is the
perennial trouble for the OCE
Wolves stopping opposing
centers.
Oregon College of Education
has the distinction of having no
one taller than 6 feet 1, where
as its opposition to date has
had them as high as ( feet 8.
SOCE, for example, racked up
two victories over OCE with
the help of 51 points by Cen
ter Leon Keefe. In four games
to date the opponents' centers
have averaged 23.7 against the
Wolves.
OCE will play tonight at
Linficld and will host Willam
ette Saturday night. Both
have tall players.
last encounter ten days ago.
Salem has scored two im
pressive wins thus far in the
young season with a 72-63 win
over the Hillsboro Spartans
and they started off the year
witn a 90-4S win over the
strong Roosevelt Roughriders,
thought to be a power in the
Portland league.
Look Good in Drills
The Vikings looked good In
scrimmage with the Willara
ette university freshmen Tues
day afternoon. Springfield has
been hurt badly by the loss of
weir key players from last
year, while the Vikings have
three starters back Tom
Pickens, Jim Knapp and Gordy
Domogalla.
Knapp, a 9-11 senior, and
Domogalla, a 5-8 senior, will
start at the guard posts and
lead the Vikings in their fast
break. At the forwards there
will probably be Wayne Erick
ton, 6-1 senior, and Tom Pick
ens, 5-10 senior. Wulf will
probably begin at center.
Behind the five starters.
Hauk has Neal Scheidel, one of
the fastest men on the squad,
and Herb Triplett, to see ac
tion as guards; Jim Whitmire,
6-3 Junior, who will see action
as center, and Gary Paterson,
one-year letterman, and Larry
Springer, a two-year letter-
man, for forwards.
The preliminary clash
matches the Salem Junior var
sity, coached by Lee Gustaf
