Salem Churches Observe
Christmas Various Ways
The anniversary e( the Christ child, one of the most
sacred incidents in Christendom, will be celebrated by Selem
churches Sunday by appropriate music, children's recitations
and in other similar manners.
In some instances the celebration will extend Into next
week with Christmas eve candlellfhtlnf services closing out
the programs.
Caroling will play prominent part in the observance
with young (oik from many churches touring the city.
Programs (or Sunday, in condensed form, include:
First Christian Christmas vespers 4 p.m. Sanctuary
choirs directed by Dean Melvln Grist; Junior choir directed
by Ernest Savage; candlelighting, carols, tableau and "Christ
mas Concerto" by string quartet. Carolling by youth groups
from T to 10 p.m. Dec . 23: 7:30 p. m. Christmas pageant di
rected by Mrs. Glen H. Vergets.
West Salem Methodist 8:15 p.m. Cantata, "Carols of
Christmas" by Lorens with Mrs. Kay Fooe of Portland, guest
soloist; 8 p.m. Wednesdsy, Dec. 23 Christmas program for en
tire family with the Intermediate Youth Fellowship presenting
the play The Lost Name."
Knight Memorial Consrefational 11 a.m. Cantata "The
Babe of Bethlehem" by Hamblen, directed by Mrs. Richard
Smart; 7:30 p.m. Pageant "Adoration of the Kings and Shep
herds." First Presbyterian 4:30 p.m. Christmas program with
children and youth departments participating. Santa Claus
to visit children in their Sunday school rooms and adults will
be served refreshments.

In Fund Drive
Presbyterians to Salem will
attempt to raise over (14.000
on Sunday morning through
a volunteer offering and
short-time pledges In a two-
fnid campaign, the National
Missions Building Fund and
the New Property Fund.
The National Missions
Building Fund is a denomlna
tlonal program to raise 11
000,000 for new church ex
pansion in the United States
snd for new seminary build'
ings. The First Presbyterian
church in Salem has accepted
a quota of 18,103.13 In this
national program. The -west
coast area is one of the most
needed places of Presbyterian
expansion and will receive
top priority In the program,
The New Property Fund Is
a local project. A few years
ago the Salem church acquir
ed new property in view of
having to move from the capi-
tol mall. The present cam'
palgn includes the $8,200.00
balance which remains on this
new property.
The $14,803.29 If to be rais
ed entirely by volunteer sub
scriptions with payment dates
on December 20, January 10,
and February 14. The con
gregation has been informed
of the plsn by mail and by
announcement from the pul
pit. No Individual solicitations
are to be made.
At their last annual meet
ing the congregation of First
Presbyterian church authoriz
ed such a campaign. The com
mittee heading the campaign
