FROM
in Washington
Washington, DC, December 8.
Dear Marian.
On of the highlights of our New
Tork visit was a special tour of the
United Nations. Ambassador Henry
Cabot Lodge, the United States dele
fate, assigned a member of hi staff to
escort Secretary and Mrs. Douglas Mc
Kay through the several auditoriums
and rooms, and we had the pr.vilcge of
getting a close up view of the Inlaid
woods In the doors of the room decor
ated by Norway, of the gorgeous hand
woven draperies in the. auditorium
furnished by Sweden, and of the use
of color in the Denmark designed coun
cil room.
The Norwegian marble, and wall cov
ering of damask which matched the
draperies in that room also attracted
ur attention. Use of the lighter col
ored Cuban mahogany In some sreas
of the building was interesting and
specially attractive is one of the
lounges that has white leather uphol
stered divans and chairs against a back
ground of green. We tat for a short
time near the desks of the United States
delegation in the gold and blue general
assembly room. So many persons at
home have viewed the United Nations
building that I have Just touched on a
few reactions to the beauty of the in
terior. From the United Nations, the Secre
tary went to lower Wall street to lunch
with T. Henry Boyd, who moved from
Portland to Chicago in 1935 and on to
New York in 1942. As lst Division
members, the two men have been long
time friends. Mrs. McKay and I lunch
ed with Mrs. Boyd in the Washington
Square area where the Boyds have an
apartment While Secretary McKay
spoke at a banquet meeting of the
American Mining Congress, Mrs. Mc
Kay and I saw "The Teahouse of the
' August Moon" an enchanting comedy,
beautifully acted and based on an inci
dent that never happened on Okinawa.
The McKays returned to Washington
on Wednesday but, I stayed on for the
remainder of the jeek for my long de
layed Mew York visit "Picnic" and

BY ALENE (PEG) PHILLIPS
"Can-Can" were additional theater
highlights of the week, but almost as
exciting as the color ar.d drama of the
stage were the Christmas decorations
both in and out of the stores. The use
of tremendous lighted displays against
the outside walls of the tall department
store buildings is a dazzling sight and
the windows with their shimmering
fabrics and glittering baubles and jew
els added further holiday glow to the
scene.
One jewelry store window called for
repeated strolls to that particular cor
ner. In each of some 10 windows was
a large Christmas tree of two dimen
sions only, outlined in a pale, pale
green crystalline mossy substance
Within the shape of the tree hung
crystal prisms and clear, glittering star
shaped objects that picked up tones of
the green and of the blue of the day
or the night all In all the most spar
kling windows one could Imagine.
While the Christmas tree In Rockefeller
Center and the long line of trees placed
along the center strip of Park avenue
were not decorated, one could guess the
picture it would be when lights were
placed and blarmg. In the open dis
play area of the modern Lever House
skyscraper was a gay, little carousel
with the tiny horses glistening with
decorations and the miniature carriages
piled with gaily wrapped gift boxes.
After luncheons at "21" and the
Stork, and a special dinner arranged
on the aircraft carrier "Antietam,"
which we toured from galley to bridge
up and down ship's ladders, an unex
pected event was attendance at a Uni
versity of Oregon alumni dinner Dr.
and Mrs. Meredith Wilson were the
honor guests and the New York alumnt
were delighted to have the opportunity
to meet the new president of the '.,'ni
versity and his wife before they leave
for the west. Commander and Mrs.
Wallace Hog of Salem, were my hosts
at a dinner at the attractive officers'
club st the Brooklyn Navy Yard and
after the visit with them and with other
friends In New York and New Jersey,
vacationing was over. As is this letter.
