Johnson Upsets
Ex Charles in
10-Rounder
Philadelphia 0J.R) Harold
Johnson will grant beaten El
zard Charles a return bout at
Milwaukee. Pittsburgh or Cin
cinnati before challenging for
the Heavyweight crown.
Tommy Loughrey, manager
of Philadelphia Harold, ex
plained today that a return
bout agreement was made be
fore Johnson won' an upset
split 10-round decision over the
ex-heavyweight champion at
Connie Mack Stadium last
night.
Charles angrily declared: I
beat him tonight in his home
town, but I didn't get the dec!
sion. It'll be different next time
when I get him out of his own
backyard."
The 32 -year -old ex-champ
from Cincinnati and Johnson
staged an excellent close fight
before 8,462 in the Philadel
phia Athletics' baU park. The
gate of $36,680 was somewhat
disappointing for promoter
Herman Taylor
Johnson, scaling only 177
pounds to Charles' 189 to, went
into the ring an 11-5 under
dog, but he wound up tagging
Charles with his second con
secutive defeat and further
shattering his dream of becom
ing the first man to recapture
the heavyweight crown.
Cincinnati Ezzard had been
top contender until upset by
Cuba's Nino Valdez at Miami
Beach, Fla., on Aug. 11.
. Referee Buck McTierman
favored Johnson on rounds,
,6-3-1; Judge Lou- Tress had
'him ahead, 7-3; but Judge Joe
Capristo voted for Charles, 5-4-1.
-
lettermen returning are guard
Orval Hadley and center Cecil
Todd.
Coach Anderson and asilt
tantt Charles McNatt and Milt
Baum will round out the Sil
verton team chiefly with play
ers who were on th Silverton
iunior varsity team last year,
or who played as reserves on
the varsity.
They Include backfield men
Bryan Shaw, Duane Mattox,
Dick Glatsner, Rodney K)os,
Keith Cooley and Norm Mc
Cullough; ends Roy Anderson
and Bob Bobbins; tackles Earl
Bleakney, Don Gilham and Ron
Jorgeneen; and center David
Gentry.
All in all, the Silverton team
will be short on weight as well
as on experience for the 1053
season. Last year Silverton fin
ished second In the Willamette
Valley league with a record of
tlx wins and one loss, losing
only to Mt Angel.
Of the 1953 WVX prospects,
coach Anderson says, "We be
lieve that th WVL wiU be
stronger this year than last. To
win a WVL championship it
seems that a team must win all
of its games. We feel that we
have a greater possibility of
losing them all than of winning
them all."
