There were a few minor ex
plosions last night as the
Dodgers cashed in on five un
earned runs to defeat the
Giants for the eighth straight
time, 8-B, despite four Vomers
oy ine losers. The Dodgers thus
went 10 full games iri front of
second-place Milwaukee, which
lost a 4-2 decision to the Card
inals when Stan Musial hit a
three-run homer in the eighth
inning.
The Beef
The big rhubarb came in the
eighth inning when plate Um
pire Bill Stewart called upon
Manager Charley Dressen of
the Dodgers and Acting Man
ager Billy Rigney of the Giants
to tell their pitchers to stop
throwing at the batters.
Leo Durocher, the real boss
of the Giants, already had been
ejected for arguing with Stew
art over a walk that forced in
a Dodger run in the sixth in
ning. "Why are you talking to
Rigney about this, why don't
you get Durocher?" Dressen
asked. "He's in the clubhouse
running the game by telephone
Just like he always does when
he gets tossed out."
Felt Abased
That riled Rigney, whose
pride waa hurt and he told
Dressen where he could go.
But Stewart did stop the brush
back pitching which Rigney
claimed the Dodgers had start
ed in the previous inning when
winning reliever Clem Labine
had thrown close to a couple
of the hitters. The alleged of
fender ' of the Giants, Larry
Jansen, who is not known for
such tactics, had prompted
Stewart to take action after
throwing close to Jack Robin
son and Roy Campanella.
Musial's homer gave soft
stuff Stu Miller his fourth
straight victory over Milwau
kee and his seventh win of
the season. He gave up even
hits to edge John Antonelli in
a duel.
More Game
In the American League the
Indians and White Sox atrug
gled to a - tie in an 11-in-ning
game halted by rain as
they remained deadlocked for
second place. In the only other
game, the Browns came up
with a 10-run inning, their
biggest of the year, to defeat
the Tigers, 14-6. Jim Hegan
and Wally Westlake homered
for Cleveland and Bob Boyd
hit a three-run homer for Chi
cago. A bases-loaded homer
by Vie Werti, No. 18 for him
this year, highlighted the big
St. Louis inning.
A Cincinnati-Chicago night
double header was rained out
and no other games were sched
uled in either league.
