Hif baggage tossed over hit shoulder, Wallace Warren
Smith, 24, a stowaway who had hoped to swim the Eng
lish Channel, leaves the liner Queen Mary on arrival at
New York. Unable to get job on the New York docks,.
Smith, who said he was graduated from La Crosse, Wis.,
State College last June, stowed away on the Queen Mary
on her last trip. He was discovered when the ship was
18 hours out and had to settle for a, view of the channel
through a porthole since he was not allowed to land in
England. He is from Pasadena, Calif. (AP Wirephoto)

. Los Angeles U.B Dr. Lee de
Forest, whose vacuum tube
made radio, television, radar
and talking pictures possible,
celebrated his 80th birthday to
day and looked forward to "10
more years of hard work."
The "father of radio" was
honored at a luncheon given by
the National Association for
Better Radio and Television.
The famed inventor is still
working in his laboratory in a
Hollywood office building, but
he Is not working to improve
the electron tube.
. "I'll let the new men take
over that work," he said. Dr.
de Forest has spent the last few
years experimenting on ways
of obtaining usable electric
current from the heat of
metals. '
The man who started his
career at the age of 13, when
he drew plans for a perpetual
motion machine, claims many
"firsts" among his inventions.

ter Merrell, Marie and Lee ar
rived the last of the week from
Bethesda, Md., where he has
been stationed at the Naval
Hospital.
. They are guests of his moth-
er, Mrs. Charles H. Law, and
Dr. Law. .
He had one month of special
school In North Carolina be
fore their western trip. After
a visit here and at Bremerton,
the family will drive to San
Francisco where they will trav
el by steamer to Guam. He will
be stationed there two years.
Dr. and Mrs. Law were hosts
for a family dinner in their
honor Sunday. Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Merrell, Newton and
Pamela; Mrs. Lyle Barmore
and Bobby of Portland; Cather
ine Stocker; Dr. and Mrs. Law
made up the dinner party. .
Mrs. Kathryn Henderson
Amity, and Mrs. Elsie Johnson
Salem, were Vernonia business
visitors recently. They also
spent a few days at Seaside,
returning by way of Tillamook.
Catherine Stocker has re
turned from a two-week visit
with her parents in Portland.

The city commission Tuesday
night dodged a decision on the
issue after 30 persons repre
senting five churches appeared
to protest the practice of wom
en wearing snorts on city
streets.
The delegation told the com
mission women who appear in
public dressed in shorts are
"ruining the morale of the peo-

The commission pointed to a
state law forbidding inddecent
exposure. But when asked for
a definition of Indecent expo
sure, the governing body re
plied that was a matter for the
courts to decide.

Agriculture Benson said yester
day that research and education
holds the key to the major
farm problems, which he listed
as reducing costs, improving
quality and expanding markets.
Asking the major farm or
ganizations to give him the
benefit of their views on farm
problems, Benson said:
"Wft must think of the entire
job, from the test tube right
on through to the complicated
business of running a farm and
distributing farm products. . .

which all of agriculture rests.
