Obscure Performers
Such obscure performers as
Dusty Rhodes of the Giants,
Hal Jeffcoat of the Cubs and
Dsva Philley of the Athletics
were impressive yesterday in
leading their second division
teams to triumph ever first
division opponents.
Rhodes became the first
player this season to hit three
home runs in a game as ht
paced the Giants to a 13-4 vic
tory over the carainais ny
bat tine in five runs. He be-
csme tha 101st player In Ma
jor league history to whack
three in a game. His batting
average was a measly .167 and
he had hit only three home
runs previously during the en
tire season.
The Cubs squared accounts
for much of tha rough treat
ment they have received In
Brooklyn this year when they
also beat the Dodgers, 13-4,
on IS bits, including two
homers by Jeffcoat and one
by Bill Serena. Jeffcoat had
hit only two homers previous
ly this season. It was Brook
lyn's worst home defeat
