Time Slaps
At Portland
Portland J- Portianderi,
Indignant over their city being
e a lied "recession-hit," were
told today that it aU was a
mistake.
Apologies and denials began
burning up the transcontinental
wires after the August 24th
issue of Time magazine carried
a paragraph indicating the new
bead of the Small Business ad
ministration, William D. Mitch
ell, hopes his program "will
enable recession-hit cities-like
Portland,. Ore., and Lawrence,
Mass., to help themselves."
Mitchell's office denied mak
ing the statement. Several
Portland businessmen and busi
ness organizations also denied
that their city waa "recession
hit." The publisher of Time,
James A. Lined, told The Ore
gonian In a wire thet "investi

'recession-hit.' We very much
regret this error," the ' wire

That would be two million
more than the previous record
of 34,993,100 set last school
year.
Thurston praised the way the
American people "are doing
more than they have ever done
before for the education of our
nation's children," but In the
same statement he said:
"This fall the United States
will be short about 345,000
public elementary and second
ary school classrooms. Three
classrooms out of every five
will be overcrowded. One out
of every five pupils will go to
school ... in a schoolhouse
which does not meet minimum
fire safety conditions."
He also said school construc
tion is not keeping pace with
demands and not enough per
sons are being prepared to
meet teacher needs.
The commissioner said it was
estimated that private and pub
lic elementary schools will en
roll 26,931,000 children this
coming year, with more than
three million entering the first
grade. Last year the enrollment
waa 29,349,000.

'Four Corners'
Pride la the borne commu
nity Induced more than 200
persona to sign a petition re
questing that the public school
located east of Lancaster
drive and aouth of State street
be designated "Four Corners."
Currently It bears the name of
Lincoln. ,
The school board Tueaday
night acquiesced In the re
quest for a change, even
though there waa a bit of doubt
aa to the appropriateness of
the designation. It was point
ed out during a brief discus
sion that the school was not
the property of the Four Cor
ners area, but waa owned by
the entire district. .
The change will leave the
name Lincoln for the small
frame structure In Polk coun
ty which was brought Into the
larger district through consol
idation. Recently Dr. Wolcott E. Bu
ren wrote the board suggest
ing that aome ether designa
tion than Lincoln be given the
building tn the Four Corners
area. The directors used the
communication aa a trial bal
loon and the Teeldents of the
area promptly circulated a
petition.
Incidentally at least one per
son baa accused the directors
of a lack of Imagination in
selecting the name "South Ba
le m" for the new high school
now in course of construction.
The two high schools will
be knwn as "North" and
"South.". The latter will be
ready for occupancy In Sep
tember of next year.
