Mathews probably won't reach
the golden goal of topping
Babe Buth's 69 homers in a
aesson, but he had an outside
chance today to beat the Na
tional League mark of 56, set
by Hack Wilson of the 1939
Cubs.
Mathews, tho free-swinging
Milwaukee sophomore, was
enly two homers behind
Ruth's record pace of 1927 to
day after drilling Robin Rob
arts, the best pitcher In base
ball, for his 40th homer at
Philadelphia last night. But
from now on the tempo must
quicken, since Ruth act a
blistering pace In which he
bit 17 homers in his last 27
games in the month of Sep
tember. Killing Pace
Psychologically, that pace
has knocked many an aspirant
out of the race for all-time
home run honors, and it prob
ably will be too much for the
22-year-old kid from Tex
arkana, Tex. But he has a bet
ter chance to top the Wilson
mark. ,
It was just 23 years ago to
day that Wilson set a new
National League mark with his
44 th homer.
Mathews would have to tilt
17 more' to top Wilson's mark.

young kid looks like he might

took the second game, 6-2
Lew Burdette going the route
for his 13th victory.
Dodgers Maintain .Lead
The Dodgers stayed nine
games In front of Milwaukee
by defeating the Cubs 6-5 as
Jack Robinson highlighted a
five-run eighth with his sec
ond homer of the game with
two on, after Chicago took
the opener 3-1 on the steady
pitching of Bob Rush and the
hitting of Clyde McCullough,
who drove In all the runs with
a homer and double.
Cincinnati topped Pitts
burgh 8-6 and 8-8, winning
the first game on a two run
oinch-homer by Bob BorkoW'
aki and the second on a two-
run homer by Roy McMillan.
The Giants ended a seven-
game losing streak when Rub
en Gomez Ditched a tour-mi-
ter for a 3-0 triumph. bu he
Cardinals won the second game

five-hit ball for his 16th vlc-
ory. ... ,

kins of the Oakland Oaks had
a no-hitter in the Pacific Coast
League books today although
his souhtpa teammate, Don
Ferrarese, went hm one-third
of sn Inning better only to
rate a three-hitter.
Atkins pitched his bob-
tailed masterpiece against the
San Francisco Seals last night
as he humbled the hitless
heroes 2-0 in the seven-inning
opening game.
Moran Breaks Spell
Then Ferrarese took over
for the regulation distance
nightcap and didn't give up a
hit until one man was out in
the eighth Inning. Jim Moran
broke the spell with a single
and eventually scored, but the
Oaks won that game, too, 7-1.
Actually, Ferrarese turned
in a more impressive perform
ance. He struck out 11 bat
ters over the nine-inning span
while Atkins only fanned two.
A great running catch by Cen
terfielder Sam Chapman of
Will Tiesiera'a 390-foot smash
with a man on base also pulled
Atkins out of the grease in the
fifth Inning.
The double triumph brought

West Explodes
Big Max West, who has been
on the injury shelf most' of
this season, exploded a home
run with two men on base in
the 10th inning to give the
Angels their 7-4 bulge. West
came up as a pinchhitter and
sent 9,412 biased fans home
happy with his blast in the
home park.
Vern Kindsfather, although
pelted for eight hits, kept Sac

throughout the night. First
