present for the occasion. The
breakfast Sunday morning
marked the end of the 19S3 re
treat aeries In which more than
200 men participated.
Other officers for 1933-34 are
the following: Vie presidents,
Nicholas P. Heade, Portland,
Lawrence Kerns, Corvallls,
Frank Redding, Tillamook, and
F. X. Albrich, Salem; secre
tary, Jakei Eberle, ML Angel
Abbey; treasurer, Alois Keber,
Mt. Angel.
During the summer series of
retreats $3000 was pledged
towards a retreat house at Mt
Angel to be erected as soon as
funds are available. Louis
Schmerber has submitted plans
for the proposed retreat house
which in structure and style
will conform to the present

accommodate 40 retreatants,
One of its outstanding features
would be that it would offer
specialized retreats to married
couples as well as laymen. .

whose wife and parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Walter TUlla, resided at
Lebanon, Oregon, is serving here

Dairy Test Expert !
For Marion County
Gervals Reed Vincent and
family arrived at Gervals this
week and have taken over part
of the Marion County Dairy
Herd Improvement testing
work. The Vincent's came from
Murray, Utah, where he tested
in Salt Lake county. Previous
to that Vincent held a similar
job in Gem Valley Idaho for
4tt years.
D.H.I.A. Is an accurate record
of production of each cow in a
dairy herd. In Marion county
the Association la- headed by
President James Phillips, Sil
verton and is supervised by the
county extension agents.

of Mt Angel Retreat Guild; Gilmore was elected presi
dent at a breakfast meeting of retreatants at Mt, Angel

Spike's Show
Wows Crowds
Appearing before two near
capacity crowds, Spike Jones
and his City Slickers unreel
ed smooth fast running show
on the stage of the Capitol
theater Monday night.
"Musical Insanities of 1054'
features some of the old time
performers and some new ones.
The outstanding namber of
the two hour show was a Ha
waiian spectacle . which fea
tures Spike on the drums. In
this number a maximum of
fluorescent lighting is used in
general display of the wide
versatility of the members of
the company. The illusion of
Spike having four arms dur
ing a portion of his drumming
Is the great.
Helen Grayco, (Mrs. Spike
Jones) features a definite style
as she sells herself and songs.
George Rock, is not only a
great trumpet man, but has be
come terrific with his tiny ton

mime bit with the banio during
"Poet and Peasant" is an all

Intermission time back stage
was used to clean up the 'mess'
from the first portion of the
show.
Salem Rebekahs
Aids Red Cross
The Salem Rebekah lodge
has voted to assist the Red
Cross with its X-ray program
during the state fair. The LA
P.M. will meet at 7 o'clock
Thursday night and following
the session will go to SUverton
where the assembly president
is making a visit.
A program, in charge of Mrs,
Fred Shafer, was presented
following the business session
of the Rebekahs. Miss Mimi
Chi, Chinese student from In
donesia attending Willamette
university, gave a talk. Mrs.
Roianu Segan sang with ac
companiment by Miss Jodelle
Parker; Peggy Prozek played
the electric guitar. She was ac
companied by Mildred Runner.
Ragweed -Sprayed
By County Crews
One thousand gallons of 2-4.
D spray was applied last week
to ragweed along Marion coun
ty roads. Weed Supervisor Jake
Neufeldt and the Marlon coun
ty road crews applied the weed
killer.
Residents who know of rag
weed plants growing in this
area are asked to notify the
weed control district by calling
the County Agents Office in
Salem.

Advance entries for the
Marion County 4-H fat stock
auction ring Friday night at
the fairgrounds, show that at
least 40 head of animals will
be offered.
The sale, an annual event
under tha sponsorship of the
downtown Lions club, will
start at I pm.

with 22 consignments. Ten
market lambs and S steers
complete the tentative list
