brought hand and ring to his lips,
and Jennifer heard someone sob
behind her and the brushing of
feet, and she and Jim were alone.

, knelt motionless, her hand still In

He opened his eyes.
Jenny," he began thickly.
"Yea, here, taking care of you,
and you're all right," she whis
ered back. ,

"Yea." He dosed off again. Jen
niter stayed until a nurse and
two doctors came back Intc the
room. One of the doctors heiprd
her to her feet and followed her

"We are very much afraid . ."

She waddled away, to Jennifers
half-laughing, half crying. "I

Seven daya later Jennifer aat
knitting composedly In Jim's hos
pital room, jennner looted up
to find Jim's eyes wide open and
fixed upon her.

In a few davs now Jim could be
moved. Jennifer watched him,
wonderina how she was to break

his eyes.

"You mean that Saturday. Jim.
the day before we were to have
been married? Do you remem

faint scorn.
"That day I met someone, quite
by accident. Someone I never
wanted to see again, Jim It
brought It all back to me. It
wasn't as If I had told you all
the sad, stupid, mistaken things
I'd ever done.- That would have
been different. But I couldn't,
there on the day before my wed
ding, know that he was alive in
the world, friendly and cheerful
and not touched at all, and that
I knew and he knew and you
didn't."

to lie around for weeks. Much
better leave me here or In any
one of the base hospitals. I'm
not going to drag you down If
I can help It."
