Garden Club Meets
At White Residence

vorson, Silverton chrysanthe
mum grower, was guest speak
er at the meeting of the Mount
Angel Garden club; Wednesday
evening, at the country home
of Mr. and Mrs. O. J. White,
east of town. Mrs. Halvorson
gave the early history of the
chrysanthemum and lectured
on the care of chrysanthemum
growing.
Mrs. Halvorson invited club
members to visit her gardens
when the early English varie
ties will be blooming the mid
dle of October, and again while
the later varieties bloom ap
proximately the second week in
November. She was the sweep
stakes winner, in the Portland
show last fall, receiving 48 rib
bons, including 3 grand prizes
on her 50 entries.
Club members were Invited
to come early in the evening

beautiful flowers in the spa
cious gardens at the White res
idence. Special guests included Mr.
and Mrs. C. H. Halvorson, Sil
verton, Mrs. Mary Albright,
Miss Kreta Albright, Mrs. Er
nest Brosig, Mrs. Olga Rogan
Birthday Event Wednesday was a big day for Susan
Mae Ramsdell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don D. Ramsdell.
She celebrated her seventh birthday at a party with some
of the guests including "old friends" from Portland. The
party group is shown above around the beautifully decor
ated table, Susan Mae being in the center at the head of,
the table, in the far background.
Miss Luthro to Be
Married in Alaska
Silverton The Rev. and
Mrs. Joseph A. Luthro are an
nouncing the betrothal of Miss
and Miss Gloria Rogan, all of
Marquam.
Mrs. Paul SUffe, president,
and Mrs. George Olsavsky, sec
retary, presided during the
business sessions. Plans were
made for club members to at
tend the opening day at the
Gresham fair, and also make, a
tour to some of the lily farms
in that vicinity. . ,
Mrs. John Drescher and Mrs.
M. N. Wampach will be hos
tesses for the September meet
ing, the second Wednesday of
the month. The annual plant
sale will be held in October.
The hosts, Mr. and Mrs.
White, were assisted in serving
refreshments by their daugh
ter, M't. John Christenson, of
Portland, and Mrs. Doris Me-
dor of Oregon City.
Bermce Luthro, the pastors
sister, to Elton Thayer of Fair
banks, Alaska. .
. Following her graduation in
1951 from the University of
Alaska, Miss Luthro has been
a home demonstration agent, at
Homer, Alaska. Following at
tending the 4-H Congress in
Chicago last December, en
route home she stopped over in
Silverton for a few days' visit
at the home of her brother.
Mr. Thayer, a student at the
University of Alaska, is with
the park service staff at Mt.
McKinley National Park this
summer.
The wedding is planned for
September 20 at Fairbanks Lu
theran church, Fairbanks, Alas
ka, where the couple are mem
bers, Mr. Thayer becoming an
affiliate during the pastorate of
the Rev. Mr. Luthro at this
church before accepting the
call to the Trinity Lutheran
church. -
The couple plan to visit in
Silverton on their wedding
trip.

Garden Club's Herb
Tea Said Success
Lebanon The 18th annual
herb tea of the Lebanon Garden
club last Saturday in the Peter
F. Smith garden attracted more
than ISO guests, many from out
ot town. Favors at the registra
tion table were small vials of
herb salad vinegar and a wide
choice of plant slips.
Mrs. L. W. Franks. Redmond,
state Garden Clubs president,
was Introduced and spoke on
federation work and projects of
indiv'dual clubs.
Edible wild plants and their
uses in salads, Jellies, greens
and various unique dishes
were described by Mrs. Lester
Muntt, Sweet Home, chai.man
of the state club's wildlife com
mittee. Mrs. C. F. Gregg of the Eu
gene Herb society recounted
the varied uses ot herbs for na
tive cookery in Lebanon of the
Holy Land. She also showed an
exhibit of herbs from Eugene
featuring pot-pourri jars, sa
