Traffic Deaths
Less in July
Oregon traffic deaths once
gain dipped downward last
month ai preliminary count
listed IS persons killed in
street and highway mishaps
compared with 47 In July last
year.
Secretary of State Earl T.
Newbry said this marks the
second consecutive month in
which fatalities were less than
those of the corresponding
month a year ago. Total for
the year to date is 215, com
pared with 232 at the end of
July, 1B3Z.
Exceptionally high fatality
tolls were recorded In June,
July and August last year
when the total went 49 or high
er in each month. No month
In 19SI has yet reached death
count of 40, Newbry said.
While the July fatality list
may grow higher if persons
now listed as injured later die
of injuries, there is a very good
chance Oregon may get
through the heavy summer
travel season with a substan
tial reduction in traffic deaths,
the secretary pointed out
Whether this is the result of
general traffic accident reduc
tion efforts or' simply good for
tune cannot be determined un
til the total number of acci
dents and Injuries are known,
Newbry commented.
