Oh," Jennifer said with a thick
throat. It ha only wouldn't! "Ha
ne'a a little I guess mott mu
sicians are a little crazy, aren't
. they?" the asked timidly.
"Think that waa crazy, do you?'
Monty asked, over his Pipe.
"Well, not that, maybe.'' Bhe
managed a ahred ol lauchter.
"But he wrote me." she said. And.
leaving her chair, she carried the
Stan Uchtenstein's letter to
Monty and stood like a child be
aide his shoulder while be read
It.
She saw his face darken: his
eyes followed the lines of the
letter a second time.
"He has no right to sand you
anything like this!" he said. Jen
nifer's heart ank; she knew how
deep was the affection between
them.
"Well, he only says there that
he he used me.- sne Began pia
catlngly, "He says he ssys that
he has a wife and all that All
he meant"
"All he meant was something
Erhaps you dont understand,
only aald. "I know damn well
what he meant! Just because
women flock to his concerts and
faint when he plays he thinks
he can get away with this sort
oi wing, ne meeu you ai my
house and hasnt any more res

than to"
"Oh. Monty. Monty I" she pro
tested, half laughing, dropping to
her knees beside nis chair and
linking her fingers over his.
'Don't get mad at him! He's I
Ejeat he's just lurauoua eiree
onate maybe. Don't pay any at
tention to it. Ill not even answer
him."
"I ought to answer him," Monty
aid darkly.
"Oh. no, no. not" She caught
the letter from his hands, twist
' ed It lightly into a ball, leaned
forward without rising from her
knees, and tossed it in st the
- open stove door. Slamming the
floor anui upon me sieepy names,
she turned back to the man, her
hands against his, her bright face
and soil wmoie ox ner nair Close
to his own. "I'm sorry I showed It
to you, Monty I" sne said laughing
at his scowl. "It doesnt mean
anything. Forget it! He's probably
forgotten It himself by now I"
Somehow roughly he put her
hands aside and got to nis leet.
"I'm going for a walk," he said
abruntlv. Jennifer, bewildered and
hurt, sat back on her heels for
a moment, regarding mm with
. troubled eyes.
"Forgotten It? No. of course he
hasn't forgotten It!" he said
angrily. "He knows damn well
what he Is offering you."
"But, Monty, he Isn't offering
me anything! He has a wife he
tells me that
"Oh, certainly he doexl" Monty
said scornfully. "He hasnt seen
her for years, but that doesnt
matter. If you 11 feel more com
fortable knowing it's a atald old
married man who's writing you
love letters . .
He got up, jerked his overcoat
from a peg. Jennifer was on her
feet too, her face scarlet.
"You're making too much of all
this,' she said warmly, getting
angry In her turn. "I wish I
hadn't shown you the letter; I
shouldn't navel It's all too silly.
He's a genius. Monty, and you
have to make allowances for
enlus"
"Promise me you'll not see him
gain, he interrupted.
"Well, I haven t snj' Intention
of seeing him: "I'd like to go to
the concert; it'd be fun. I thought
you might go. and we could ask
a few of the others"
"Your stepmother wouldn't rate
anything so grand, I suppose?"
Monty said with a sneering look
quite unfamiliar to her on his
"Betty, oh yes." she answered
innocently. "I asked her first."
She saw the man's expression
Change, soften.
,"You know why I dont like
a feller like that to make love
to you, dont you. Jinny?" he aald
"I suppose 1 do." she answered
uncertainly.
"Yes, and why Is It?" He was
(landing with one arm thrust in
to the dangling coat and sticking
out st an angle from his shoul
gr. he had slapped his hat down
over one ear; with hs free hand
he groped for the other armhole.
Light shone on the portion of his
bald head that the hat left ex
posed; from under the tipped
Drun one eye at ner wim a sort
of angry appeal. Jennifer could
not mist it; she burst Into her
own joyous laughter.
"You think It's funny," be said
resenuuny.
"It's lunny." Jennifer answered
-nut seriously,- sne went on
"whats the matter? You know
don't like turn; I hardly know
him. What do you want ma to

Monty Jerked off his coat as
abruptly as he had attempted to
Jerk it on. He sat down, staring
at her in sudden meekness and
forlomne&s.
"You disarm me." be said.
"When you put on that obedient
little-daughter look, with your

you"
"Monty, stop that silly stuff!
He la u g h e d apologetically.
"You won't fall fo him? Women
do. In serried ranks."
Pall for him! Dont be

"No, but you're not saying that

Her quick flush made the earn

toward him lovelier than ever.
"Whose would I take. Monty?
After what you've done for me!"
"You will Dosltively have to
stop this," Monty said In a low
tone. He got up and mended the
fire. Jennifer, when he had re
sumed his chair again, stared at
nun aistressediy. in a long silence
they loosed at each other.
"Ill tell you," the man present
ly said with an air of putting
some restraint upon himself.
'Well all go to the concert, you
and I and Betty and who else?"
juiier
She wouldn't coma from Oak
land to hear anyone! She isnt
particularly musical, Julie."
"Then the CooDlnU? The little
mousy lady who apparently knew
every note ne was playing."
"Bee do and Marie Good Idea.
She's probably a subscriber for the
gallery seats, but no matter, she
can hand 'em out to somebodv
else; they live in a nest of star

handle somewhere. All right, 111
get in touch with them. And you
don't have to believe what the
letter said. You won't, will you"
i was ina one wno Lhotioht
from the beainnlm that it was
au nonsense, Monty - sne remind
ed him. "I did believe what i
man said once," Jennifer added
alter a moment. There was a
silence, Monty watching her with
suooen attention. "But not again,'
she said In a low tone.
"You're still remembering that
man." Monty said.
"Still remembering!" She echo
ed the words in mild wonder as
if to herself. "Yes, I'm still
remembering. Monty." she said
reasonably. Then, with a long
deep sigh, she got to her feet. "I
have to go. I aald I'd be onlv a
lew minute.
Monty walked with her to the
window that opeaned on the roof
terrace.
"No other man would ever have
a chance, eh? I'm glad. Jinny.
You wouldn't want to make tout
old professor Jealous."
You! Nobody will ever do for
me what you've done, Monty,"
she aald. "Nobody will ever Uke
your place. My one hope." she
went on with sudden feeling, lav
ing her .small warm hand upon
him as they stood together un
der the stars. "Is that someday
can show you how grateful I

wen," ne said in an odd voice,
"someday I'll tell you."
She stopped short, a moment
later, crossinc the grtttv dark
roofs, and spoke half aloud.
"He didnt mean ... he couldnt
have meant ... not Montv. That
would spoil evervthlng! No, he
didn't mean that!"
The concert was less thrilling
than her anticipation of It. It
was excitina to enter the Vila
opera house, to mount superbly to
me wine corridor oi the boxes,
to settle herself In a front seat
Desioe little Mme. Corjplnt. who
was quite speechless with felicity.
But Bettv showed on this occa
sion a sort of mtneingness, an af
fected haughtiness that was en
tirely new to Jennifer and that
bewildered her. Betty would un
der no persuasion take a front
seat. "Nobody wants to see me!"
