Spectacular 140-Yard Clip
, Shot Wins for Lew Worsham
By CHARLES CHAMBERLAIN
ChlMto l") Lew Worpham
has th answer to a qaeettoa
that hat bothered (olfen tinea
tne game iu Invented.
"It a hole-in-one luck
kill?" Wortham didn't make
an ace. He did sink a long
proach, estimated by onlookers
as 140 yards, lor an eagle 2 on
the last hole yesterday to beat
out Chandler Harper by one
stroke for the $25,000 first
prize in the "World" golf cham
pionship at Tarn O'Shanter.
That shot, made with a sand
wedge while Harper was being
congratulated on winning the
tournament, was worth $15,
000. It undoubtedly was the
most lucrative single shot in
the history of the ancient game.
! Let's create the drama it all
entailed:
1. It meant winning the
'"world" championship of golf,
title lacking in prestige but
compensating in cold cash a
first prize of $25,000, tops In
golf. Second place paid $15,000
leu.
' 2. Harper, who had lost two
ether tournaments this season
by one-stroke margins, had Just
finished with a 70 for 279, nine
under Tarn O'Shanter par, by
pitching a No. 8 iron ahot 20
Inches from the cup for a cinch
birdie 3.
S. Television cameras were
trained on Harper. Radio com
mentators were praising hit f in
: lsh. He stood there by the 18th
' green being cheered for win
ning, en record and before 10,
000 or 15,000 frenzied tpecta
- tors. v -
4. Then came Worsham. He
had just dropped a 7-foot putt
for birdie I on the 71st hole.
He needed another birdie S on
the 410-yard 72nd to tie Harper
and send the showdown into a
audden death playoff.
8. Worsham belted a tremen
dous drive.
. 6. . Jimmy Demaret, famous
pro, was on radio at the 18th
green, lauding Harper's finish.
7. About 140 yards in front
of the green, Worsham pulled
sand wedge from his bag.
8. He fired away. The ball
lit on the lower part of the
green, bounced about three
times and covered 35 to 40 feet
before it rolled into the cup.
9. Harper stared in disbelief.
10. Demaret muttered one
word after a pause: "Gawd
damn." 11. Approximately 500 fans
rushed toward Worsham and
lifted him to their shoulders.
Old-time observers contend
ed that It was the greatest shot

three boats finished.
More than 300,000 persons
