Portland Defeats Seals 4-2 in 22-lnning Marathon San Francisco (U.B The Portland Beavers scored two runs in the 22nd ibninf here yesterday to beat the San Francisco Seals, 4 to 2, in one of the lontest marathons in Faeifie Coast league history. The endurance contest, wit nessed by 1395 die-hard fans, most of whom stuck it out to the bitter end, was the third 22-inning game in PCL annals but fell two innings short of tying the league recard for longevity. The Seals and Oakland bat tled 24 inning on June 8, 1909 and Portland and Sacramento went the same distance on Sept. 10, 1911. The other two 22-inning con tests were between Sacra mento and Oakland in 1928 and Seattle and Los Angeles in 1921. Portland's winning counter came across In the 22nd when Frank Austin singled to left; Hank Arft walked and Fletch er Robbe singled to bring Aus tin home.. They added an in surance run a few seconds la ter when Bob Marquis singled to score Arft. A total of seven pitchers saw duty on the mound three for Portland and four for the Seals. Winning pitcher was Larry Ward who went in far Red Adams in the 20th. Adams previously relieved a tiring Royce Lint In the 15th. Los ing pitcher was Ted Shandor who also entered the game in the 20th inning. The two teams played score less bal from the 10th inning. San Francisco opened the coring in the fourth when Frank Kalin walked, went to second on a infield ' out and scored on George Vico's sin gle. Portland tied it up in the fifth when Eddie Basinski sin gled and came home on Aus tin's bloop double. The Beavers went ahead in the 10th when Jim Gladd wal'.ed; was sacrificed to sec ond by Don Eggert and gal loped home on Basinski's sin gle. It didn't last, however, as the Seals came right back to knot the score in the same inning when Lou Stringer came through with a clutch single to score Vico. That set the stage for the marathon that eventually last ed four hours and 20 minutes. Hollywood retained its six game lead over Seattle by trim. mlng Sacramento 4-3 while the Suds were defeating Los An geles in 10 innings, 8-7. Broke the Tie But the Rainiers helped Al Widmar win another when Gordie Brunswick singled home Artie Wilson with the tie breaker in the tenth, i Dale Long clubbed his 25th homer in the eighth inning to give Hollywood the one run it needed to veto the Senators. Charlie Schanz threw the goph er ball and got the defeat. Bill Howerton slammed his 23rd of the year in San Diego with two Acorns on the bags but even that wasn't enough to halt the Oaks' slide into the basement. Howerton's clout came in the first game against Willie Luna and that was all they could do against the southpaw from Tacubaya. (Br The Associated Press) San Praaelece Art Araton, 14414.
