Redding Makes
Five-Ton Club
Ernest A. Reding, Brooki, is

itrwberry grower to qualify
lor membership in the Five
Ton Strawberry Club, an
nounce! County Extension
Agent D. L. Rasmussen. Red
itu? harvested slightly under
28 tont from 5tt acres straw
berries. About one third of
the field was Marshalls and
the remainder was the North
west variety.
Other Marlon county grow
ers qualifying for. member
ship in the Five Ton Club are
Bernard Smith, Woodburo;
Onas Olson, Salem; G. P. Con
nor, St. Paul; and Carl Nlbler,
Gervals. These growers will
be among those honored at
the Five Ton Club banquet in
the Multnomah Hotel, Port
land, on Friday, August 7.
The banquet is scheduled for
6:30 pjn.
To accommodate those mak
ing last minute requests, Ras
mussen will accept banquet
reservations until 11:30 m.
on Wednesday, August 8.
Tickets are $2.50 per person.
Although reservations are nec
essary, those attending are re
quested to pay for their tick
ets at the banquet. The ban
quet is open to anyone inter
ested in the strawberry indus
try. Featured speaker will be
Sr. George Darrow, U.S. de
partment of agriculture hor
ticulturist stationed at Belts
ville, Maryland. Another im
portant part of the program
will be the awarding of lapel
pins and certificates of mem
bership to those growers who
qualified for membership in
the Five Ton Strawberry
Club. .

. j Harold Johns Goes
To Service Overseas
Among the Salem men who
. will leave for overseas duty
early in August with the Third
Marine division, which is sta
tioned at Camp Pendleton,
Calif., will be Pfe. Harold J.
Johns, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jesse J. Johns of 248S Crest
View drive.
i Johns, who attended Salem
schools, was a truck driver
. for the Commercial Sand and
Gravel company prior to en
tering the Marine Corps in
, February, 19S2. He has been
. stationed at Camp Pendleton
ever since leaving to report
for duty with the Marines.

FESTIVAL OPENS

North Howell
North Howell Mr. and
Mrs. Wayne and nephew, Bill
Strachan, drove to Albany
and visited for the day with
Mrs. Strachan's aunt, Mrs.
Anna Van Horn.
Mr. and Mrs. Alan Wlesner
vacationed over the week-end
at Taft on the coast. The Weis
ner's children stayed svith
their grandmother, Mrs.
Thomas Miles, and Mrs.
George Free and daughter,
Margaret, from Portland, who
came to stay with the children
during their parents absence.
Sunday afternoon guests at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Jackson were Mr. and Mrs.
Max Schabner from Oswego.
Janice Jackson left recently
for Vancouver, B.C., where she
plans to visit for several days
at the home of her uncle, Tom
Jackson, Sr. She was accom
panied by her cousin, Tom
Jackson, Jr., from Albany.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Foss-
holm and sons, Bob and Jerry,
attended the Woelke reunion
