Mandell stood rooted to the

holes' A new fear nagged at Man-

But the two shots that had
punched holes through the crown
of his hat hadn't been fired at Mr.
Curtu. Mr. Curtis had been stand
ing in front of the window, near
the file case, on the far side of
the room.
Mandell looked across the street
at the window of his hotel, the
hotel where Oale was waiting,
back of one of the closed win
dows. He felt suddenly drained
and cheated. He eooidnt go to

had no cigarettes and no money.

shop open.

He said the testified she took
the women to Dr. George H.
Buck in Portland, paying him
fees up to $250 for abortions.
He quoted her as saying she
usually sat in his waiting room,
but once watched him use In
struments In an operation.
Buck was convicted at Port
land in 1931 of manslaughter
by abortion. Fined $1,500 and
sentenced to five years in pri
son, he appealed to the State
Supreme Court. He is free on
bond.
