21 Men Will
Leave in May
Twenty-one more young men
will leave Salem during the
month of May for induction
into the Armed Forces with the
date of their departure from
Salem Hay 11. SHR
from Salem May 11.
Tuesday 26 other young men
left for Portland wnere, - on
Wednesday, they were inducted
into the Armed Forces. Two
others from this county were
transferred out of state for in
duction.
Of the group leaving here
May 11 nine are men with Sa
lem addresses.

vllle; LeRoy H. Frey and
Franklin "D" Hunter of Stay
ton; Clemens F, Schaffner and
Robert P. Kolt of Mt. Angel;
John W. Gardner, Silverton;
Raymond C. Helmlg, Gervais;

Norman H. Prickett, Brit,
lsh vice-consul in Portland,
was a Salem visitor Tuesday
and Wednesday, and while
here made contacts with the
Chamber of Commerce and
men connected with the indus
trial life of Salem.
The consular service how
ever, Mr. Prickett said, is not
alone interested in industrial
affairs. Men in the consular
service have to be Informed on
many things, because of the
great variety of questions asked
them and the many problems

Information about visas, le- j
m questions, money exchange
and trade relations are Just
few of the things in the routine
day of a man in the consular
service, according to Mr.
Prickett. And he doesn't trv
to avoid them. Both British
subjecti and American citizens
are invited to ask about any
thing they want information

Mr. Prickett was transferred I
to Portland from the Seattle
office the first of this year. The
Portland office is in the Lewis
building at SW Fourth and
Oak.

Woodburn Election
Over Fire Truck
Woodburn Members of
the city council Tuesday night
approved a special election to
be held June 12 to vote on a
three-year tax levy to pur
chase of a new city fire truck.
The tax would amount to
$5334 yearly for three years
for a total of $16,000 for the
truck and equipment..
Hearing for proposed an
nexation of an area in East
Woodbwrn from Laurel ave
nue, along Highway 89-E to
Hardcastle street, was set by
the council for June 16. j
Hearing on the city budget1
was set for May 26.
Appointment of Harold
Elchsteadt as city attorney to
fill the vacancy left by the
death of Blaine McCord was
announced by the council.
