Special Election in
Eola District May 8
Special election 30 all editions
Eola Fire District will hold
special election Friday, May
8, at Salem Academy between
8 a.m. and 8 p.m. to vote upon
7 mill tax levy necessary to
obtain protection from Salem's
fire department.
Some weeks ago the district
aubmitted proceeds from a 4
mill levy to the Salem depart
ment but this amount, the city
stated, would be inadequate.

Eola Fire District consists of
a six-mile square area contain
ing about 75 homes. Eola
Acres forms the western boun
dary, Willamette river to the
south, Salem city limtls on the
east and Gehlhar road on the
north. Much of the area is
covered with brush, grass and
timber growth making the diS'
trict particularly vulnerable to
fire such as threatened the en
tire community when about 200
acres were burned over in July,
1851. i
Salem fire department has
provided Eola district with pro
tection during the interval of
fire district organization and
will continue to do so until
May 25. However, If the $500
or $600 mlllage levy is not ap
proved by the voters May 8,
the Salem department will not
respond to fire calls from the
community after May 25.
After contacting other fire- i
fighting agencies, district sup
ervisors concluded that the Sa
lem fir department offered a
more adequate protection than
could be obtained from other
sources available. -
Thursday election will bo
held In conjunction with an
other concerned with organiza
tion of a water district for the
residential area near the Aca
demy. This water district elec
tion is entirely apart from tho
vote on additional millage to
give Eola fire district protec
tion by the Salem fire depart
ment. ,
