In San Francisco, meanwhile,
Dan Curtis was having the time
ol his life. Thli was doctor stuff
and it was also business stuff, a
happy combination of his two
main Interests. He smiled at the
gentlemen assembled about the
lone table. "There," he announced,
"is how matters stand. The com
munity's growing. All the records
Indicate that, all the building per
mits Indicate It."
A little man with a bald head
nodded. A big man with a red
mustache grinned.
"And the competition Is neg
ligible, gentlemen. There is one
elderly doctor in the town. He has
an idea for a community hospital,
as Mr. Eliot has told you. On the
other hand, a great many people
oppose that expense. So It would
seem that a little publicity, a lit
tle campaigning, will eliminate
Dobbin from the picture."
"Eight percent?" Inquired the
little man with the bald head.
"That strikes me as being pretty
high."
Dan turned to Mr. Eliot, his
lawyer, Mr Eliot promptly rose.
"In the beginning, of course,
the return would not be that. But
consider the over-all picture gen
tlemen. A hospital is needed. And
it would draw not onl" from the
Golden City area, but the entire
.peninsula area, me rooms would
usually be occupied. The rates
charged would enable us in time
to pay eight percent at a mini
mum, and probably more."
"If there's no community hos
pital, of course," pointed out Dan
with a display of honesty. "There.
I'm not hiding the difficulties. As
a matter of fact, I don't ask back
ine until the monopoly Is assured.
But if it Is. Trow could you lose?"
It was effective. The little man
with the bald head slapped his
hand on the table. "You can count
me In for fifty thousand."
"I'll buy twenty-five," announ
ced the man with the red
mustache.
"Add my lifty," said Dan, "and
we've got half what I want. I
think we'll be able to swing It,
don't you, Eliot?"
The lawyer shrugged. "A small

Hands were shaken, and Dan
and his lawyer went down in the
elevator to Market Street. They
went back to -he hotel and found
Langley Curtis growing somewhat

Langley Curtis nodded briefly.
He was in a vile temper. He'd
spent the afternoon discussing Ills
future with several highly placed
radio people. Each had assured
him his future would be as glori
ous and profitable as his past had
been If he patched up the quarrel
with Acme and his former sponsor.
Greatly pleased, he'd rushed back
to the hotel and put in a long
distance telephone call to New
York "Tell Mr. Bronson I've
thought things over" he'd com
manded the executive's secretary
Instead, the girl had simply laugh
ed. "Look, Mr. Curtis, I don't hold
a grudge against you, but why
don't you take up fish peddling?''
She'd hung up on him; three
thousand miles from New York,
he'd heard the Iron doors of con
tinued success bang shut against
film. ,
"It Isn't Important," he snapped
now. "The hospital won't make
the same money lor you that my
career will. It's time you started

make a comeback. You ought to
take a plane to New York and
visit some people."
Dan's face set Into grim lines.
"I'll give you a ring." he told the
lawyer. Then he took his uncle's
arm and led him to the elevator.
In the suite, he took off his jacket
and sailed Into the biggest fight
of his life. "Let's face it, Uncle:
time's running out on you. The
big thing now is television. And
while I'm fond of you, I can't im
agine people tuning vou In to
watch you shout platitudes, banal
ities and the rest."
"You've got it wrong. Dan "
Langley Curtis sat down on the

think for an instant that I could
n't score on television. The world's
in a mess. Looming over all Is the
threat of the atom bomb, the
threat of war with Russia. Yes,
there may be war and total de
struction. On the other hand,
there may be peace. And it seems

to practise. That was your plan.
This hospital idea"
"Has been In mv mind a lone
time, Uncle. I've had checks made
all over the Peninsula. I've ar
ranged for backing. I've even
worked out some plans to bring
In business. No. You misunder
stood. This hospital Idea is intel
ligent, in tne long run it will make
more money for me than serving
as agent of even a successful
radio man. Also, It's what I want
to do."
