Actually the grey - colored
streak of Alf Vanderbilt had
scared off the owners of all
other three-year old Derby
eligibles in the land except
10, and at least one of these
was likely to concede before
the entry box for the Derby
starters opens tomorrow.
That concession depended
upon track conditions. If the

Thus the probable field for

represented in all because Van

Area Extends
Portland () The open sea

will be extended to a big part
of the state Saturday. On that

Still, some of the fine Cas
cade Mountain areas will open
up on Saturday. Among these
are Odell, Crescent, Suttle and
Blue Lawes and Rock Creek
and Wickiup reservoirs.
In the area opening Satur
day, bag limits are the same
as for those areas which open,
ed April 18: limit of 10 fish a
day with not more than five
of them over 12 Inches long.
Specific regulations will be
found In the 1993 angling reg.
ulations but in general, the
minimum length for fish in
Eastern Oregon waters is six

Tiger Jones vs.
Jimmy Herring in
: TV Fight Tonight
New York U.R) Ralph
(Tiger) Jones of Yonkers,
N.Y., will be seeking revenge
and a higher ranking In the
middleweight division when
he faces Jimmy Herring of
Ozone Park, N.Y., tonight In
return 10-round bout at St.
Nicholas Arena.
Jones, currently ranked
No. 9 in the middleweight
class, is a slight favorite to
reverse a setback at the
hands of Herring last sum
mer. The nation's tele vision
fight fans, still disturbed
over last week's mismatch
between lightweight cliam
' pion Jimmy Carter and Tom
my Collins, should be treat
ed to a more even battle to
night Jones is a rugged, hard
puncher, while Herring de
pends on speed and a good
left hook.
Giants a 1-0 decision over the
Braves; the Dodgers made it
four straight victories with a
7-4 series sweeper over Cin
cinnati; and the Cardinals-
Phillies night game at Philadel
phia was halted after five in
nings because of rain with the
score tied at 1-1. All the action
counts in the official averages,
but the game must be re-played
completely.
Yankee Younster Wins
The Yankee youth movement
took over in a 6-1 victory at
Chicago that featured steady
eight-hit pitching by Whitey
Ford and a homer, triple and
single by rookie outfielder Bill
Renna, who was making his
first big league start. In the
only other American League
game, three-hit pitching by Vir
gil Trucks and Bob Elliott's
three-run homer in the seventh
gave the Browns a 3-1 night
triumph over the Washington
Senators. The Philadelphia at
Detroit game was rained out
and Boston and Cleveland had
an open date.
Thomson's smash broke up
double-zero pitching battle
between winner Sal Maglie and
loser Vern Blckford at the
Polo grounds. Magliet gave up
six hits and Blckford yielded
but five.
