Farmer Union
Mokes Protest
The Farmer Union In Mar
ion county Is Informed that
President James G. Fatton of
the National Farmers Union
. has protested directly to Presi
dent Eisenhower against the
curb on operations of PMA far
mer committeemen by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
The Farmers Union is also
protesting the slash of $110 mil
lion for agricultural conserva
tion payments in the hew bud
get. If Congress goes along,
says Patton, it will mean the
end of most lime and fertilizer
payments. Patton's statement
, was released today by the le
gislative committee of the Ore'
gon State Farmers Union.
He blasted the PMA shakeup
as a "direct reversal" of prom
ises made during the campaign
that farm programs would be
."genuinely farmer-run , opera
tions" and asked Elsenhower to
have the PMA order recalled or
revised.
' The new order deprives state
and county committees of their
status as directors of the local
PMA programs. PJHA commit
teemen now work on a part
time basis and are paid only
for the days they are actually
working. Under the new set-up,
their work will be done by full
time employes of the Depart
ment of Agriculture and the
PMA committees will have ad
visory status only.
