Wednesday, April 8, 1953 THE CAPITAL JOURNAL. Salem, Oregon 1 Gunfighter's Return ly LESLIE ERNENWEIN (AP Nsw.fsatureal CHAPTER 23 Ev Odegarde ns In the kitch en, helping Lunpy Smith with the breakfast diihes. when Mrs. Al Shumway came in and asked, "Can I see you alone lor a mo ment, Eve? It's very Important.'' Mildly surprised, and wonder In? what prompted a social call this early in the day, Eve led her visitor out to the back stoop and . closed the door. "Well, I don't suppose you'll like what I'm going to say, but 1 con sider It's my Christian duty and I'm going to do it." Eve smiled. "Does it concern Sam Maiben?" she asked intui tively. Faith Shumway nodded, com pressing her lips. "And you think I should hear it?" Eve prompted. Mrs. Shumway nodded again. . "You're the only one that should know about It. The only one." "Well, II It concerns Sam, I sup pose it's all right .'or me to know," Eve said. "It concerns him and our Ruthy I" the woman announced with hissing insistence. "It's the most scandalous thing you ever heard tell ofl" Eve frowned and said, "You mean that Sam has that he's In volved somehow with your Ruthy?" "Not lust somehow," Faith Shumway hissed, "but like a man with . a woman. Honey-f ussln' that's what he's up to. with our Ruthy that's scarcely more than ; a child. Al caught Ruthy with a man behind the corral last night about nine o'clock." "But It couldn't have been Sam." Eve said quietly. - "Al knowed Sam had triflimr ways because he's seen him with Delia stromberg on two or three occasions since Sam got engaged to you,- Mrs. snumway announ ced. Eve remained silent for a mo. ment, revealing none of the shock ed resentment that flared in her Finally she said, "I wonder who , nanny is protecting. "What you mean protecting?" Eve shrugged. "It wasn't Sam your Ruthy was with last night," erne suia wiwi quiet confidence. "I'm certain of that." "How so?" Mrs. Shumwav de. manded. "How could you be cer tain?" "Sam rode Into town at dusk yesterday," Eve reported. "He had supper with me, then surrendered to Sheriff Roblllarde. Sam was In Jail at nine o'clock." "In Jail I" Faith Shumway echo- . Cu, Eve nodded, smiling a little tu me woman's astonishment. "Perhaps It was one of the Isabelle boys who called on Ruth," she sugRested. "Oh, Lord what've I done I" Mrs. ohumway wailed. "I should n't have told you!" She grasped Eve's arm, plead ing, "Promise you won't mention this to a soul. Not a single, solitary soul!" "Of course I shan't," Eve agreed, "and you'd do well to forget that talk about Sam riding around with Delia Stromberg." And at this moment Charley Bonn rode up the valley on a sweat-latliered horse. "Jim Rim baud needs a doctor," he an nounced In a croaking voice. "I been trying to get here all night, but them Roman Four toughs kept cutting me off. By grab, It was awful r , "What happened to Jim?" Eve asked, hastily stripping off her apron. "Well, three of them ganged him In Malben's cabin," Charley said, slumping In his saddle. "Booger Bill, Jubal, and Shatter. They slugged him considerable all three of them. They had him down and Booger Bill was booting him to death when I shot out the lamp. , Rimbaud may be dead by now." "Oh, no!" Eve cried, and ran up the alley. When she passed the livery stable she called, "Harness Doc's horse, Joe, and please hurry!" ' Ernie Link was sitting on the Alhambra Hotel veranda when, he saw Eve Odegarde run toward Doc Featherstone's house. He was wondering about that as he watched Charley Bonn dismount in the livery-stable doorway. Something must be up. Link took a short-tjiouted der ringer from an inside pocket of his vest, using his left hand for this chore. He transferred the lethal little gun to his right hand,! which was partially concealed by the bandaged cast that cased his broken arm from elbow to knuckles. Ernie nad borrowed the derringer from Sheriff Roblllarde's collection of captured weapons on the pretext of needing it to point at Sam Maiben in case the fugi tive came to town. But Ernie had another reason for wanting a hideout gun. A more lmportalnt reason. Now, with his right hand hid den by the wide sling that sup ported the arm, Link went down the steps and crossed Main Street in time to Intercept Charley Bonn. "What you doin' in town so early?" Link inquired. Charley shrugged and said eva sively, "Might of come in lor sup plies. "On horseback?" Ernie scofied Bonn peered at him through bloodshot eyes. He said, "I don't reckon It's none of your business why I came in.' Surprised at such brashness from so meek a man. Link asked, "What you been drinkin", Char ley? You must be drunk to talk like that." "I been dodging my shadow long enougn," Bonn said siowiy, trunk ins this out as he went along. "I man can't side-step trouble all the time. Hes got to take nis share. It ain't no worse to be beat down. or even shot, that It is to be dodg ing all the time. A man gets tired of that. He feels sick to his stomach. Which is why I'm telling you It ain't none of your business why I came to town." "Drunk," mused Ernie. "Drunk as a lord." Then seeing Doc Featherstone and Eve Odegarde hurry toward uaoDeris uvery, Linn asKeo, "Where's Doc going in such i rush?" Bonn didn't answer for a mo' ment. Finally he said, "Might be Miz Swenson havin' another baby," Whereupon he headed toward me jaii to nave a talk witn sam Maioen. (To Be Continued) Carol Curtis Pattern Jail - T MAKE MM EASIER!
