15 Graduate Friday From
High School at Prison
The firit high school class at
Oregon state penitentiary will be
graduated Friday and two of the
15 seniors have already been
promised admittance to colleges.
Robert Gilbert, assistant direc
tor of the prison school, said
Tuesday that one Inmate would
attend College of Puget Sound
and the other the University of
Utah. Their educational work
contributed to their paroles.

Albany Divorces
Albany Two divorce actions
have been filed in circuit court,
with Frances White filing suit
against Glenn White, to whom
she was married Dec. 0, 1948,
and Jessie Viola Vergara, who
was married to Melvin Vergara,
In Reno, Nev, June 16, 1951, has
filed a similar suit The latter
named plaintiff asks for restor
ation of her maiden name, Ross.

impressed with the effects of -the

taking correspendence courses
through the State Extension Di
vision. All the teachers in the
school, which includes high
school, grade school, and classes
for illiterates, are prison in

Youth of Dallas Present
Recreation Program Views
Dallas Monday evening a
representation of the youth of
Dallas presented to the Junior
High School Parent-Teacher As
sociation their views about the
needs of Dallas regarding a rec
reational program.
The PTA had sponsored an es
say contest in the Junior high
school and the prize winners
were asked to present their es
says to the group.
Winners ' for the different
grades were: 8th grade, Dora
Ann Shearman, first, and Larry
Diehm, second; 7th grade, Fran
ces Taylor, first, and Murline
Fast, second; 8th grade, Dick
Sherman, first, and carol woods,
second; and fifth grade, Brenda
Muller, first, and Hosalie Kobb,
second.
Because Brenda Muller and
Rosalie Robb were unable to at
tend the evening meeting their
essays were presented by Linda
Carr and Lee Ann Salisbury.
In papers entered in the con
test were found suggestions rang
ing from a funny book library
to ballet lessons, and football.
The bulk of the papers stressed
$10 Million in
Bids Coming up
The Highway Commission win
receive bids on IS highway con
struction projects estimated to
cost about 10 million dollars at
its meeting in Portland, January
21-22. This is the largest con
tract letting in terms of money
ever to be offered for bids since
the inception of the commission.
The meetings will convene at the
Benson Hotel, at 8 a.m. each day.
Approximately 84,600,000 el the
total of $10,100,000 represents
bond financed projects.
The 28 projects call for 86
miles of grading, 47.89 miles of
rock base and surfacing, 16.S4
miles of oiling. 22.S8 miles of
black top paving, construction
of 22 bridges totaling S.48S feet
in length, and the furnishing of
160,000 cubic yards of mainten
ance material in stockpile.
Work will be performed under
the projects in 21 of the state's
38 counties, requiring the mov
ing of nearly 5,820,000 cubic
yards of earth and rack in road
bed construction, the producing
and placing of 726,000 cubic
yards of rock, cinder and gravel
base and surfacing material,
160,000 cubic yards of rock or
gravel maintenance material,
127,100 tons of plant-mix asphal
ts concrete pavement, 9,800 cu
bic yards of Portland cement
concrete, nearly 1,972,600
pounds of reinforcing and struc
tural steel; together with several
thousand feet of drainage pipe,
and large quantities of other ma
terials and supplies incidental to
highway and bridge construction
activities.

Sewer Plant
Bids Sought
Lebanon Bids are being
sought this week for construc
tion of a sewage disposal plant
here this summer. Bidders have
until 8 p.m., March S to submit
completed forms. They will be
opened at that time.
The work consists of construc
tion of a 60-foot diameter pri
mary aerator clarifier, control
building with raw sewage
pumps, and sludge beds, each 25
by 100 feet In addition there
will be 1463 feet of 27-inph con
crete pipe plant interceptor, and
1910 feet of 30-inch concrete
pipe plant outfall.
The construction site Is locat
ed just east of the paper mill on
five acres of ground given to the
city for this project by Crown
Zellerbach paper mill. The out
let pipe will pass through prop
erty owned by Ace Baker, who
likewise made it available to the
city at no cost ,

of the Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars, which will show at
Falrvlew home Wednesday and Thursday nlghta of this

new Dallas High School is com
pleted and the present junior
high building la no longer need
ed for school purposes it might
be converted into a youth cen
ter, with possible affiliation with
the VMCA.
