Jorys Offer S. Salem
30 Acre Park District
i
I Salem Heights Many issues
jof importance to the residents!
f the Liberty - Salem Heights
rea were discussed Wednesday
evening as the new officers of
the South Salem Suburban
Chamber of Commerce took
jover their duties,
i Taking office were, president,
iDon Gardner; vice - president,
Myron Butler;' secretary, Robert
JFriess; and treasurer, E. A. Bam
iord, Jr.
j Directors are Chet French, for
ia five year term, and Fred
Browning. Archie McKillop:
icharles Shaw, and Harold Gard
iner, each serving a one year
term.
! The group accepted after the
approval of the board of direc
jtors, an area of about 30 acres
'of land for a park south of Sa
lem. The park to be deeded to
Ithe South Salem Suburban
iChamber of Commerce,
j It will be called Joryville
iPark, and was given by Mr. and
Mrs. Edwin Jory. It has always
ibeen a dream of the Jorys to
'perpetuate the family name.
I The choice area is in the Jory's
'holdings which were at one time
1 2460 acres.
j The area consists of natural
timber stand, natural park area
jwith a creek and log bridge. A
l spring to serve as a water sup
Jply and the possibility of a
I swimming pool at a later date.
Near the log bridge are the
I picnic grounds and the possi
bility of development for recre
litional facilities,
j The Jorys were made lifetime
i members of the Chamber of
I Commerce.
, Robert Friess discussed one-way
traffic at the 12th street
j junction. Also the changing of
ithe traffic light to be installed
Jat Vista avenue to Ratcliff
i drive, where the school children
cross the highway, was discuss
t ed.
j Myron Butler, chairman of the
, Salem Heights Water board, dis
i cussed the annexation proposals
to be voted on at the water dis
i trict election to be held Dec. 1,
jat the Salem Heights Commun
ity hall. One addition will be W.
Browning Ave., Kurth St., and
Cunningham Lane, and the
properties bordering the streets
Also included are the remainder
of the Dickson addition, and a
section east of the South Village
area from Helen Ave., to Morn
ingside Ave., to 12th St., to Oak
Hill Road.
These areas will square off
the district.
The cost of the lines to be in
stalled in these areas will be dis
tributed to the residents living
in the annexed areas without
any added cost to the present
district.
A proposal for one-half mil
lion gallon reservoir is being
considered at the West end of
Browning Ave., as the highest
point possible for the best dis
tribution of water. This would
benefit all living in the district
as well as the community.
Tremendous strides have been
made in the progress of the Sa
lem Heights Water district in the
past two years.
New modern sized lines are
being laid. The district is oper
ating on its own wells, which is
considered very good from the
health standpoint, with a very
adequate water supply at a nom
inal cost.
The district maintains about
600 meters, and can serve about
1000 with their present water
supply. Don Gardner is on the
ballot for re-electi'on as a wa
ter commissioner.
The Liberty - Salem Heights
Fire district will hold its an
nual election on Dec. 1, at the
Liberty store.
New business enterprises slat
ed for the South area were an
nounced and the location to be
on U.S. 99E. Mrs. Fred Brown
ing reported on the Cheer com
mittee and it was suggested that
carnival be planned for the
January meeting.
The Salem Heights Woman's
club served the refreshments,
Serving were Mrs. Lyle Bayne
Mrs. Fred Browning, and Mrs
Howard Gardner. Myron Butler
won the hospitality award,
Patterson Is
Given Surprise
Hillsboro, VP) Paul Patterson,
president of the Oregon senate,
said Thursday Gov. Douglas Mc
Kay had given no indication in a
telephone conversation when he
would resign to accept a post as
interior secretary.
"It is a wonderful thing for
the state of Oregon that Eisen
hower has selected Gov. McKay
for his cabinet," Patterson said.
"He will be able to do much for
the state, for the entire Pacific
Northwest and the Pacific Coast
region. If he should resign the
post of governor before Jan. 12,
I would do my best to fulfill the
duties of his office and to deliver
the same excellent type of ad
ministration that McKay has pro
vided." If Patterson should succeed
McKay as governor, the Wash
ington county court would name
a successor to fill Patterson's post
in the commg legislative session.

Tooth Decay in
Oregon High
Portland () Few states have
a higher rate of tooth decay
than Oregon, and the answer to
this problem is to add fluorine
to drinking water, the state
dental health director said Teurs-day.
Dr. David M. Witter of the
State Bpard of Health told the
League of Oregon Cities conven
tion that military draft examina
tions show only four states have
higher rate of tooth decay.
He said Oregon water was low
in natural fluorides.
There is no reasonable ground
to oppose addition of fluorine to
the water, he said, asserting that
years of study have failed to
show any injurious effect from
it.
It does not affect taste either,
he added. Witter compared it to
adding a drop of water to keg
of beer too small to be notice
able.
Planning and zoning also were
