CHAPTER 1
"But, Clay!"
Sally' eyes were frantic with fear,
a stark, anguished fear that racked
the smooth sweetness ot her body
and turned her soft lip6 into thin
lines of agony.
"They'll hunt you down and hang
you! Wayne Shepley has money!
He has power! He has influence!
Hell never forget that you killed
his son. He'l! never stop until you're
dragged back to St. Louis and tried
and sentenced and hanged!"
He nodded grimly Clay Bennett
Parrar, this lean aark man who had
come back to Westport from Santa
Fe less than an houi before with a
fortune in gold in his wagon bed.
"He'd like to," he admitted. "May
be I would, too, if I were in his
place."
His lean face lightened a little,
touched by the reckless sardonic
humor too many men had learned
to fear. His fingers under her chin
lifted her face to his. gently, reas
suringly. "But I'm not in his place honey,
and I can't spare the time for a
Rood, old-fashioned hanging right
now, I've got a lot of other things
I'm planning to take care of first.
One of them"
He drew her a little closer to
him. For an instant she was sur
rendering her heart and then she
was shaking her head in passionate
negation, her eves closed and the
silver tears tracing bitter pathways
down her cheeks.
"Oh, no Clay no!" she pleaded.
"Not now. my darling! Not until I
know you're safe not until we're
so far away that Shepley can't ever
reach us."
"Shepley? Well, we'll take care
of SheDley."
He frowned, considering the mur
der warrant that waited for him a
half-dozen miles away, at Westport
Landing, the two hard-bitten St.
Louis officers who waited there to;
serve it and watched Sally's cabin
while they waited. They might even
be outside now. And then he shook
his head, a cynical smile of dis-,
belief touching his lips. Even the :
most conscientious guardians of the '
law would be indoors on a night like
this, a night when the rain lashed ;
viciously against the cabin walls i
and the thunder rumbled up out
of the prairie and crashed against
the bluffs that lay beside the
river.
. "Sally." he said slowly. "When
you wrote me In Santa Fe, you told
me you had three steamboats run
ning up and down the Missouri be
tween here and St. Louis. You've
till got them?"
She shrugged her shoulders Im
patiently, pulling herself out of his
arms and moving a little away.
"All right." She flung the words
over her shoulder as If she de
spised them. "I've still got the
steamboats. I've got three agents in
St. Louis who find more profitable
cargo than the boats can carry. Ev
eryone says we'll have war with
Mexico in 1846 and that's less than
six months away. If we do, they
??on't just be steamboats they'll be
bating gold mines. Now," she spun
around to face him, "does that tell
you all you want to know about the
steamboats? Will you forget them
now and think about Wayne Shep
ley and and your life?"
He nodded gravely, but there was
still the sparkling fire of laughter
dancing far bnck in his eyes."
"I will, honey. I eon promise you
I will. For example, all Shepley's
witnesses against me are bound to
be in St. Louis, and your three
agents are in St. Louis, too. Doesn't
that suggest anything to you?"
"St. Louis?" The dark eyebrows
that were liko notes of strange mu
sic knitted a little as she probed the
meaning of his words. "St. Louis . . ,
I don't understand you. Clay."
"Look, Snlly, it's like this: If
Shepley doesn't have witnesses, he
doesn't have a case. And if those
agents of yours are hnlf the high
binders 1 think they are, they can
range for those witnesses to get
out or develop bad memories or
disappear! It takes unscrupulous
men and it takes money, but you've
cot the men and I've got fifty thou
sand dollars in gold cached In the
wagon that brought me here. Give
them a year and Shepley's case
against me will blow up in his face!
You'll find that most of the wit
nesses enn be bribed, and those that
won t go along on that basis can
be removed!"
Sally turned slowly, her swift-
paced Gallic brain plucking and
tugging at me laonc 01 uie pian ne;
had presented. I
"It could be dont." she admitted I
thoughtfully. "Yes, it could be
done."
Her eyes widened in sudden
alarm.
"But, Clay you can't stay here
until it's over! There'll never be a
night or a day or an hour when
you'll be safe!"
"I'll be safe. I'll be a thousand
miles south of here in General Sam
Houston's Republic of Texas along
with all the other outlaws who got
across the Sabine or the Red River
just two jumps ahead of the sher
iff's posse. I'll be safe enough, Sally,
but you'll have to stay here and
see that, it all works out."
"If you can't come back " She
caught her breath and lifted her
face to his. "If you can't, darling,
I'll find the way to Texas, and I'll
find you."
