CHAPTER 4
Armin Zachary as a man whom
the years had conditioned against
a shock. He was like his cousin in
some ways, unlike him in others.
His cheeks were ruddy, his eyes
deep-set under heavy brows. When
something disturbed him, he had
schooled nls face never to betray it.
In the case of Tirb Valse, he had
known, with a sort of resigned fat
ality, that sooner or later his cous
in would turn up to trouble him
again. That knowledge had come
in the form of a new letter from
the War Department, correcting the
former announcement that alse was
dead. Zachary had read it without
any outward show of emotion. For
a moment his face had flushed with
anger, and he had half risen to
send for Marsh and Huff. Then he
hsd sunk back again, and had care
fully burned the letter saying noth
ing. Long before he had burned his
bridges behind him. The Gun was
his, now, to have and to hold, the
first thing of any value that he'd
ever managed to get hold of. And
it would take a good man, he re
flected grimly, to take it from him.
A better man than Trib Valse.
Not that he underestimated his
cousin. It was simply that he had
made his plans, over the year. And
he had stacked the deck so heavily
in his own favor that it could tip
but one way.
Trib Valse was back. Word had
Just been brought to him, and Valse
himself .would be along very soon
now. That meant a fight, Just as he
had always known that it must.
He looked up as Valse pulled up
before Lundeen's and tied his horse
at the chewed hitching rail before
it. From his window on the second
floor, Zachary was able to study
him unobserved for a moment. Even
after the word which he had re
ceived, the change in Valse was
shocking: the snowwhlte hair, the
lines of suffering in his face, Yet he
noted that Valse still moved swiftly,
purposely, as a man his age would
normallv do.
Zachary was ready when the
knock came at his door. He open
ed it and waited with polite interest
on his face, all eke carefully school
ed out.
"Yes?" he asked,
"You don't need to put on a
show, Armin," Valse told him short
ly. "I know that you know me well
enough."
"Shoiild I?" Zachary studied him
carefully, "I don't usually forget
faces, but I'm afraid you have the
advantage of me."
"So you've forgotten the name of
Valse," he jerred.
Znchary stared. Then he shook
his head.
"You don't mean to claim that
you're my cousin, Trib Valse," he
protested.
Valse helped himself to a chair,
Unperturbed.
"You knew that I vas on the way
here to see you, of course," he said.
Zachary admitted it,
"Marsh brought me word about
you. I'll admit that I was curlus
But even after what he said, I was
not prepared. You look even less
like mv cousin than I'd supposed
nm'bndy would that claimed to be

"Do you think that you can get
nwny with this, Armin with steal
ing my ranch?" Valse asked tight
ly. Zachary shrugged.
"I don't like that word," he said.
"The Gun belongs to mo, by right
of inheritance. If my cousin was
alive, it would be a different story.
He's dead. And your attempt to
impersonate him, if you'll pardon
my bluntncss, Is a damned poor bit
of faking."
Anger, wlldness grew in Valse,
but he fought it down. Always, ev
er sinco they had been boys togeth
er, Zachary had had that effect on
him. the ability to stir him to un
reasoning rage.
Zachary saw the flash of anger,
and apprehension stirred In him.
Not that he was afraid of Valse. But
he knew Vnlse's rages, his determin
ation. "You come here and make a claim
what seems to me to be an out
rageous claim. The sensible thing,
it seems to me, is to put it up to
a sort of Jury of folks who used to
know mv cousin, whom you claim to
be."
'Let's get on with it, then," he
accepted briefly.

it, Zachary turned to alse with frig-

"Since you claim to be my cousin,
you might suggest a few names of
old-timers," he said.
Valse took the challenge prompt
ly, beckoning to Lundeen himself,
who, across the aisle, was just fin
ishing a sale of a pair of boots to a
cowboy.
"Come over here. Lundeen. IT you
can spare a little time," he request
ed. "You should know who I am
Trib Valse,"
The news, of course, had SDread
by now, with an overly long thatch
of reddish hair and a friendly grin
threw back his hair with a gesture
and held out his hand.
"I've heard of vou, he admitter.
'And I did know Valse right well.
If you are him, you've changed a
plenty,"
"You don't think he is Trib
then?" Zachary challenged.
Lundeen shook nis head.
"Sure don't look it," he confessed.
Though of course, the vears can
change a man."
ljunaeen agreed readily enough
to serve on a sort of Jury on the
question. Three others were called
to loin them, old-timers who nan-
penea to oe in town, mempie siy
was a rancn owner, a little, wiry,
bald-headed man. Jack Elwood had
been Lundeen's first clerk and man
of all work, and still was. And
Mike de Polo was a gambler, among
the first to hit the country, and still
here. He had a reputation as a
square-shooter. All three had been
good inends of vaises in the old
days.

Austin, 82, was killed here Mon
day when an automobile struck
her as she was crossing the
street.
She walked Into the path of
a moving car at a downtown in
tersection, police said witnesses
told them.

Records Are Set
Albany Seth French, local
government weatherman, chalk
ed up a new record in his
weather reports Monday as the
Willamette river dropped to 01.1
feet below the standard low
mark, the lowest the river has
been here since 1865. The low
est mark previous to the reading
Monday morning was set in
August and September of 1951
when the river was -1.0 feet be
low the standard. That mark was
tied Saturday and Sunday and
broken Monday.
Lack of rain was naturally
blamed for the new mark, but
Albany's 42-day drouth ended at
1 p.m., Monday when rain start
ed falling, and by mid-afternoon
was still falling.
Monday s rain was the first of
any kind recorded since Sep
tember 8 when .04 of an inch
was noted.
U. S. Workers Drop
Washington (TP) The number
of civilians on the payroll in the
executive branch of the govern
ment dropped 12,681 during
August to 2,501,459, the civil
service commission said today.
