Portland W) Banks C. Rod-

that 47 years ago he deserted
his Army post in Alaska after
embezzling government funds
was held in jail for Army au

time ago" Here is the story he
told:
In 1905, during the gold rush.
he began embezzling govern-!

discovered one day that his ac
counts were $300 to $400 short
and that he had no chance of re
paying the money. So he made
up his mind "to get away as
soon and as far as I could."
He trekked 300 miles overland
to seaport and sailed to SanDIll,d u.b: No.'l trass' hay nominally
Francisco. Later h came in
Portland where he made a mea
ger living as a mechanic under
the assumed name, James T.
Coss.
He spent six months in the
Oregon State prison in the early
1930s for armed robbery.
