CHAPTER 18
When Gardiner returned to the
cottage he found Melisande atreteh
ed on a swinging canvas hammock
idly reading a book. As he came
near the held the book towards
him.
"I found it on John's bookcase,
he explined. "Did you know hed
written any books, Paul."
"No. But I'm not astonished."
"It's called 'Obsessional Neuro
sis.? The first chapter's all about
compulsive phenomena. Bright lad,
Isn't he?"
Gardner took the book from her
hands and began to study the
chapter headings. Then? with a
mystifying expression, he threw
the book to the hammock and took
Melisande in his arms.
"That stuff's for bug-merchants
and star-gazers," he said. "Certain
ly it's not for honeymooners." He
kissed her fervently. "For the first
time in my life I'm really happy,"
he announced, "and you're the sole
cause of it, Sandy."
She felt his face rough against
her cheek and she snuggled into
the warmth of his bared chest.
"When you come to think of It,"
he went on. slowly, "it doesn't take
much to make the average man
happy. Yet so few manage to
achieve happiness." He sat up.
"Maybe they don't know the reci
pe." "That puts you in a special class,
1 suppose," Melisande chided.
"At least I knew what I wanted,
he replied.
"What do you want, Paul?"
"You."
"Is that all?'
"You. And an easel and a few
brushes and a not of paint. Simple,
Isn't it? Yet it's taken me thirty
six years to get it."
Melisande stirred. "It's not every
man who'd settle for such a few
simple things. For instance, I can't

the back corridors of his mind and

more." he said, finally. "You know,
Bandy, I'm hungry again."
In the late afternoon Gardiner
returned to the jetty and untied
the rope that fastened the small

rowboat. From round the bend of
the bay there came the regular,
.staccato chug-chug of the mall
launch. He stepped into the row
boat and maneuvered the oars into
the rowlocks. Rowing out a piece
he allowed the boat to drift until
the launch came Into sight Then
he took an intercepting course. The
engines of the launch were cut
and the two boats silently drifted
together.
A great, lumbering figure rose
ghost-like from the bowels of the
launch and stood athwart the fore
derk. Gardiner recoiled at the first
sight of him and his mouth opened 1
and shut in a spasm 01 lear ana
trembling.
The figure lowered itself to its 1 I

flung down beside Gardiner and I
the rich, deep voice oi tne new
comer announced briefly;
"I' the new caretaker, Name's
Daniel Sale. People call me Dan
ny." I
Gardiner shrank away from him
and his arm shook against the still
ed oars.
"Daniel Sale?" he asked in
credulously. "The name's familiar.

The face of Daniel Sale was
quite expressionless.

day John Taylor sat in his office
at the recreation center paring his I
nails and marveling at the con-1
stitutlonal stupidities of mankind,
and lor the woman Melisande he re
served a sour and damning oath.
He was acutely conscious of a more-than-professional
feeling for Paul
Gardiner's wife, and It Irked him
to meditate upon his unscientific
and unorthodox approach to the
new problem that had come up.
Normally, he should have reported
tne anair or Katie sale to the po
lice and let it go at that. But he'd
preferred, after due reflection, to I
execute a formula of his own de
sign, with a very good chance of
disaster tor all concerned.
For Paul Gardiner he felt noth
ing but the detached, clinical In
terest that a scientist might ex
hibit In a hydrophobic dor. Gar
diner was a dangerously complex
inamauai, now a proven potential
killer. Something had to be done
about him, and quickly. But how
to do it without involving Meli
sande in an unforgetable tragedy:

nary activity, such as washing
