next meeting and bridge party Thurs
day, June 26 at the Woman's club house.
The dessert luncheon is scheduled for
1 o'clock.

G. J. Tucker, Mrs. Lawrence Bernard,
Mrs. Charles Fredrickson, Mrs. Robert

Mr. Hippe Wed
At a candlelight ceremony solemnized
Friday evening in Christ Lutheran
church at 8 o'clock, Miss Mildred Braat
en, the daughter of O. I. Braaten of
Kindred, N.D., was married to Ernest
Hippe, son of Mrs. Martha Hippe of
Salem. The Rev. Carl Schulz of Con
nell. Wash., officiated at the double
ring ceremony.
Baskets of pink gladioluses and white
mock orange, ferns and lighted candles
decorated the church for the service.
Mrs. Edward Stein was soloist, accom
panied by Frederick Wilson at the or
gan. Misses Dorothy and Diana Wilson,
nieces of the bridegroom, were candle
Jighters, both wearing pink organdy
flicks.
The bride, given in marriage by her
father, wore a floor-length white em
broidered organdy gown, made with
full gathered skirt with scalloped hem
line; and a bolero with long pointed
sleeves and Mandarin collar. The shoul
der length veil of illusion was attached
to a small Venetian lace hat. The bride
carried a white Bible topped with a pink
cymbidium orchid arranged with step
hanotis and streamers.
Mrs. Oswald Swenson of Kindred,
N.D., was matron of honor for her sis
ter. She wore a pink frosted organdy
frock with matching gauntlets and
headband. She carried a crescent bou
quet of deep pink carnations and Elfe
roses.
Miss Janet Humphrey, niece of the
bride, was flower girl. She wore a pas
tel green frosted organdy dress with
matching headband and carried a bas
ket of pink sweet peas.
Clarence Hippe was best man for his
brother. Ushering were Harvey Chris
tenson and Jacob Fox.
For her son's wedding, Mrs. Hippe
wore a rose sheer dress with white ac
cessories and a corsage of Rubrum lilies.
The reception was in the church
parlors. The bride's table was set with
a pink organdy cloth and white tapers
in crystal candelabrums. Mrs. Haven
Bolemeier was hostess. Cutting the
cake was Mrs. Raymond Wilson, sister
of the bridegroom, assisted by Mrs.
Milton Lindsay. Pouring was Mrs. Otto
Wusack, aunt of the bridegroom. Mrs.
Harold B. Jory was at the punch bowl.
Assisting in serving were Mrs. Patrick
Fahey, Mrs. William Berndt, Mrs. Rob
ert Wyatt and Mrs. Jacob Fox. At the
gift table were Mrs. Leo Stenbeck, Mrs.
Frank Chasteen. Mrs. Kent Humphrey,
sister of the bridegroom, had charge of
the guest book.
For going away the bride wore a
white nubby linen suit with purple ac
cessories, and the orchid from her wed
ding flowers.
Following a trip to Lake Louise and
Banff the couple will be at home at
2285 Frederick street, Salem.

The Christian Service guild of Engle
wood United Brethren church is meet
ing Tuesday evening at 7:30 at the home
of Miss Mary Jo Hall, 3180 Lancaster,
with Miss Eleanor Moddemeyer as co
hostess. Miss Hall is leader for the
evening.
Mrs. Edna M. Prince will be hostess
to the Cootiette club Friday at 8 o'clock
at her home, 650 Electric avenue.
June activities for the Cootiettes have
included a surprise progressive dinner
given in honor of Mrs. M. E. Clemens,
grand grayback, and a joint visit to the
Portland veterans hospital with the
Cooties.
Election of delegates to the national
encampment at Los Angeles will be in
cluded in the meeting of the Marion
Auxiliary to post No. 661, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, Monday at 8 p.m. at the
VFW hall.
A joint social with the post will be
under the direction 'of William Baldwin,
from the post, and Mrs. Virgil Bolton
from the auxiliary.

Committee chairmen arc scheduled to
present their yearfy committee reports
during the business session. The Lion
airres, newly formed singing group, will
provide music during the program.
The singing group is composed of
Mrs. LeRoy J. Stewart, Mrs. Warren
Clark, Mrs. Everett Wilcox, Mrs. Ben
Gifford and Mrs. Louis Neuman. Ac
companist is Mrs. F. H. Hamstrect.
An outside evalualor will be present
at the Salem Toastmistress club meet
ing Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Golden
Pheasant.
This will be the last meeting of the
year and all club members will parti
cipate in the event. Miss Maxine Her
ringer is to be toastmistress for the
evening.
Cherry Court, Order of Amaranth,
will' have a friendship meeting Tues
day at 8 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign
Wars hall. They will entertain the
Acacia court of Hillsboro at this last
meeting of the year.
The Degree of Honor Protective as
sociation will hold a regular business
meeting Monday at 8 p.m. at the Salem
Woman's club.

Couple Wed in
Portland to
Live in Salem
Wed last evening at a service in the
Westminster Presbyterian church, Port
land, were Miss Billijcan Riethmilier,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A.
Riethmilier of Portland, and Richard
Harold Hill, son of Mrs. Lloyd M. Hill
of Salem and the late Mr. Hill
The 8 o'clock service was performed
by the Rev. Dudley Strain of Salem
and Dr. Leonard Odiorne. Miss Mary
Hawkins was soloist and Stanley Glar
um was organist.
The service was a candlelight one,
and the church was decorated with
white gladioluses and pink snapdragons.
The bride wore a bouffant nylon
tulle" and imported Chantilly lace over
white satin gown. A Quaker bonnet of
the Chantilly and seed pearls held in
place the fingertip illusion veil. The
bride carried a prayer book on which
was a white orchid.
Mrs. Leonard A. Fricscndahl of Hins
dale, 111., was matron of honor for her
sister. She wore a shell pink organdy
over taffeta gown with violet sash, and
carried an arm bouquet of pink Elf
roses.
Mrs. Robert C. Goodlin, Mrs.. Laur
ence F. Schott and Mrs. Donald M.
Fitcairn. all of Portland, were the
bridesmaids. Their dresses and tlowers
were identical to those of the matron
of honor's.
Kathleen Hill of Salem was the
flower girl.
Dr. Clifford Hill of Salem was best
man and ushering were Dale Bates,
James Minturn and Howard Hill, all of
Salem, and Leonard A. Friesendanl of
Hinsdale, 111.
The reception following was in the
church parlors.
The couple left on a wedding trip to
British Columbia, the bride wearing a
gold dressmaker suit with navy acces
sories and her bridal orchid.
The couple will be at home at 3240
Hammell avenue, Salem, after July 1.

church will meet Wednesday at 1:30

Women's Catholic Order of Foresters
will hold their monthly business and
social meeting at the Salem Women's
club at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Hostesses for

and Mrs. Joe Domogalla.
The Presbyterian Women's associa
tion will have a picnic lunch on Wed
nesday at 12:30 at the Lefclle street end
of Bush park.
Members are asked to bring either a
hot dish, salad or dessert and their own
table service. Circles four and six are
in charge of the affair. There will be
a program following luncheon.
Silver bell circle, No. 43, Neighbors of
Woodcraft, will meet Friday night at the
Salem Woman's club house at 8 o'clock.

A duo married this afternoon
in the Fireplace room of the First Pres
byterian church were Miss Helen Lor
raine Simpson and James R. Watson, Jr.
The service was solemnized at 1:30
o'clock, Dr. Paul N. Poling officiating.
Baskets of pink and white delphiniums,
gladioluses and daisies were arranged
by the fireplace and a bouquet of the
same flowers was on the piano.
Jean Sturm sang and Mrs. Ralph
Dobbs played the organ.
The bride wore a navy blue silk shan
tung dress with a white polka dot Spen
cer jacket, a white lace hat trimmed
with rhineslones and navy blue and
white accessories. Her flowers were a
leaf bouquet of white carnations. John
E. Taylor, a brother-in-law, gave the
bride in marriage.
Mrs. John E. Taylor was attendant
for her sister. She wore a sheer silk
print, a white lace hat trimmed with
rhinestones, green shoes and white
gloves, and her flowers were a leaf
bouquet of pink carnations.

Bride Friday
A wedding of Friday evening was that
of Miss Dicnie Julianna Verhagen and
Sydney Hudson Francisco, the service
being at 8 o'clock in the First Congre
gational church, Dr. Seth R. Hunting
ton officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs.
Bernadina Verhagen and Mr. Francisco
is the son of Mrs. S. H. Francisco.
For the wedding music, Mrs. Glen
Humiston sang and Jean Hobson Rich
played the organ. Armand Carrow and
Arthur Parks lighted the candles.
The setting at the church was all in
pink, snapdragons and carnations being
arranged at the front of the church,
pink blooms and ribbon down the pro
cessional aisle.
The bridal gown was made of lace,
with a sweetheart neckline, long pointed
sleeves and train, a border of satin trim
med the front of the gown and train.
The fingertip illusion veil was caught
by a half crown of net trimmed with
pearls. Tiie bouquet was a nosegay of
red roses and pearls.
'The bride was given in marriage by a
brother. David Verhagen.
Miss Cleo Eaton was honor attendant,
wearing a ballerina length net dress
with cape and apron effect of lace. She
carried a bouquet of deep pink carna
tions with pearls.
Miis. Lyman Sundin, Jr., and Mrs.
Daniel Verhagen, sister-in-law of the
bride, wore bridesmaids. Their dresses
were the same as that of the honor at
tendant's. Their flowers were nosegays
of light pink carnations arranged with
pearls. All attendants wore bands in
their hair matching their bouquets.
Hal Ratzeburg was best man. Usher
ing were S. G. Hinkle, Jr., and Charles
Baker.
The reception following also was at
the church. Mrs. Chester Varncs cut
tiie cake and pouring coffer was Mrs.
Fred Moriarty, Mrs. James Hencry pre
siding at the punch bowl. Others as

mell. The bride's table was set with a pink

Afternoon
Dr. L. E. Watson was best man for
his brother. Lewis Mayers was the
usher.
The bridegroom's mother, Mrs. James
R. Watson, attended the wedding wear
ing a black and gray taffeta dress and
her corsage was of roses and sweet peas.
The reception following was at the
John E. Taylor home. Mrs. Lewis
Mayers cut the cake. Pouring were
Miss Gretchen Bartcls and Mrs. Harold
Doerfler. The bride's table was set
with a white linen outwork cloth, and
the wedding cake, arranged as the cen
terpiece, was topped with yellow roses
and white sweet peas, nesting on greens.
Summer blooms in pastel shades dec
orated the living room and dining room.
For traveling, the bride wore a gray
chambray dress with matching jacket,
red scarf and red shoes.
The couple are driving to St. Louis,
Mo., to visit relatives and to attend the
wedding of a niece of the bride. They
will make their home in Salem at 2633
Candis street.

Woodburn Candlelight installation
ceremonies for the officers of the Wood
burn Business and Professional Women's
club were held Thursday night at St.
Mary's Episcopal hall with Mrs. Arthur
Wcddle of Salem, past state president,
as the installing officer.
Installed were Mrs. Omcr J. Adkin
son, president; Mrs. Walter Taylor, first
vice president; Mrs. John Dickson, sec
ond vice president; Mrs. George Timm,
recording secretary; Mrs. Walter G. Mil
ler, treasurer; and Mrs. Molly Hunt, cor
responding secretary.
Thirty-nine members and guests were
present. Mrs. Adkinsun was presented
with a president's pin in behalf of the
club by Mrs. Molly Hunt.
Speaker of the evening was Miss Hat
tie lirat.el. Sali in attorney and member
nf the Salem club, who showed colored
slides of Europe Willi interesting com
ments. Musical numbers were vocal so
los by Mrs. Harold Eichslead. accompa
nied by Mrs. Glen Ahrc. The dinner was
served by members of St. Mary's Guild.
Mrs. Clark C. McCall of Salem, a for
mer member of the club and its first pre
sident, was a special guest. The execu
tive committee, headed by Mrs. Aclkin
son, was in charge of the program and
dinner. Assisting were Mrs. Henry
Stangc, Miss Mabel Livosay, Mrs. George
Timm, Mrs. E. F. Johnson, Mrs. John
Dickson and Mrs. Walter Taylor.
