Willamette U Names New
Assistant Football Coach

Gerald L. (Jerry) Frei, 28,
head football coach at Lincoln
high school in Portland for the
past two years, has been nam
ed football line coach and
freshman basketball coach at
Willamette university. He suc
ceeds Sam Vokes, who recent
ly retired to assume the head
basketball coaching job at Col
lege of Idaho.
The announcement of Frel's
appointment was made in
Portland today by Dr. G. Her
bert Smith, president of Wil
lamette university.
Official hiring of Frei took
place at a meeting of the uni
versity's board of trustees.
Frei had been strongly re
commended by the athletic
committee of the board of
trustees.
Before going to Lincoln high
school, Frei had served as line
coach under Ted Ogdahl at
Grant high in Portland.
Ogdahl, who recently was
named head footbal Icoach at
Willamette university, said
today he is very pleased to
learn that Frei will again be
on his coaching staff, and that

Betty Jameson.
Miss Rawls, who nearly has
stroked to her first $10,000 this
year as a sophomore pro, is
making her fourth stab at the
Western Open title. Her best was
a quarterfinal surge in 1951.
In two other shots, Betsy was
knocked out early by the sister
pro from the Lone Star state
she encounters in Saturday's
3-hole championship match at
Skokie Country Club.

Betty's first two conquests were

Rains Delay PGA Golf

The committee's decision

Frei's record as head coach
at Lincoln was six wins, seven
losses and one tie. His Card
inal team of last year was in
front place for several weeks,
but finally finished in a tie for
third.
Frei is a graduate of the
University of Wisconsin. He
played on the Wisconsin var
sity football team as a guard
in 1942, 1946, 1947 and 1948.
The interruption was due to
war services.
He will report to Willamette
September 2, date of the open
ing of football practice. In ad
dition to serving as line coach
of the Bearcat grid machine
and head frosh hoop coach, he
will be an instructor in the
university's physical education
department.
Frei is married and has two
children, a three-year-old boy
and a one-year-old girl.

will have to be played in its en
tirety since the league rule on
games suspended by a curfew,

game history in the majors.

Browns and Senators get to
gether this year, things are
likely to be tedious.
The rules provide that no

Victoria The Salem Senators
suffered their ninth loss in their
last ten games as the Victoria
Tyees handed them a 4-1 loss
here last night.
Salem got only five hits off
lefty Ben Lorino, the Western In
ternational league's top mounds
man. The win gave the Cana
dian southpaw his 11th victory
in 14 starts this season.
The Tyees have now won 12
of their last 14 games and have
a full seven-game lead over Spo
kane. Sal DeGeorge went the
route for Salem. He gave up
six hits and three walks.
Victoria got off to a 2-0 lead
in the fourth inning. Salem
closed the gap 2-1 with a tally
in the eighth. That was the first
run scored off Lorino in 25 in
nings. Victoria bounced back with a
pair of markers in the bottom of
the eighth for its advantage.
Dick Bartle, one of the lead
ing hitters on the Salem team
after a slow start this season,
led the Senators at the plate
with two hits, Including a dou
ble. Connie Perez, Cuban third
baseman for the Senators, was
booted from the game by umpire
Eiler for arguing over a called
third strike early in the game.
Salem and Victoria in a split
doubleheader today. One game
will be played In the afternoon,
one at night.
Salem then spends Sunday
traveling to Tri-Clty, where
the Solons open a series Mon
day. Salem doesn't return
The city has installed a back
atop on the Softball field at
Bush's pasture, and several
softhall players have pitched
in with rakes to smooth the
field.
Bleachers are now being in
stalled. Quite a few pledges for
the financing of the new field
are still outstanding.

the cellar-dwelling Yakima
Bears Friday night.
Helmuth swatted out three
doubles for his night's work at
the plate, including a two-bag
ger in the top of the 13th that
sent Artie Wilson scooting across
the rubber with the winning run
The Broncs threatened to
make it a runaway in the early
innings as they piled up a 3-0
lead in the top of the sixth.
But Jerry Zuvela put the
Bears temporarily into the
lead in the bottom of the sixth
with a rrand-slam homer.
The Wenatchee Chiefs boosted
their stock a little with a 9-8
decision over the second-place
Spokane Indians, defending
champs. The Chiefs rallied lor
two runs in the eighth with two
away to gain victory. Victim of
the uprising was reliefer Bob
Roberts, who issued a walk to
fill the bases, then dished up a
big one down the alley that Lyoe

struggles. Brooklyn stayed

ping the Pirates, 5 to 4, in

run pinch-hit homer by Shot
gun Shuba, while Whitey
Lockman plunked a line drive
double into center in the 10th
to give the Giants a 4 to 3
victory over theCubs.
The Braves made 10 runs in
the sixth to top the Cardinals,
12 to 7, even though the losers
bounced back to score all ot
their runs in the seventh. Robin
Roberts pitched the Phils to a
three-hit, 3 to 1 victory over
the Reds as Del Ennis supplied
a two-run homer and Hank Ed'
wards ruined Roberts' shutout
with a Cincy homer.
