Korean Vets Will Get War
Benefits If Congress Agrees

Washington VP) Veterans of
the Korean war will get benefits
similar to those given World War
II veterans if a measure approv
ed by the House Veterans Com
mittee Is passed by Congress.
Before House and Senate okay
uch a bill, if they do, they may
make changes. So the finished
product is apt to be different
from the committee version. But
this is a quick look at it as it
tands.
The benefits apply not only
to members of the armed for
ces who served in the Korean
theater but to all who were in
the armed forces, at home or
abroad, on or after June 27,
1950.
Education If he served at
least 90 days, a man gets l'A
days of education or training at
government expense for each
day of service but no more than
36 months. And he must apply
within two years after discharge.
A World War II veteran who
served at least 90 days got a
minimum of 15 months. The
maximum was 48 months. With
out going into details, it can be
said generally he was allowed
more time after discharge to ap
ply. Education and Training Al
lowance If he's enrolled in a
course full-time, a Korea veter
an gets $110 a month if he has
no dependents and $150 if he has
one or more. That's all. On that
money he must live, pay his tu
ition, buy his books.
A World War II veteran got
$75 a month to live on if he was
single, $105 if he had one de
pendent, and $120 if he had two
or more dependents, plus his tu
ition fees and book costs up to
a limit of $500 a year.
What of a World War II vet
eran who was getting an educa
tion under the old GI Bill of
Rights and then had his educa
tion interrupted by going back
into the service?
He'd be entitled, upon his dis
charge, to finish out the time in
school due him under the old
GI bill, plus whatever schooling
he earned as a Korea veteran,
but no more than a combined to
tal of 48 months.
But a World War II veteran
who didn't apply for his educa
tional benefits before the dead
line of July 25, 1951, set up for
most World War II veterans,
couldn't claim them now as a
result of service in the Korean
War. He'd get only the benefits
due him as a Korea veteran.
That July 25, 1951, deadline
doesn't apply to men who had
World War II service but were
discharged after July 25, 1947.
They have until four years after
their discharge to apply for
World War II benefits.
Housing The same housing
benefits for those who served on
or after June 27, 1950, as pres
ently are given World War II
veterans: Guaranty of home
loans up to 60 per cent with 1
maximum of $7,500; business
loan guaranties of $2,000: and
direct loans up to $10,000 in nc
city areas where private financ
ing is not available. The interest
in all cases must not exceed 4
per cent.
Social Security Korea and
World War II veterans get the
same wage credit for every
month in service $160 for old
age and survivors insurance.
Mustering-out-pay In place
of readjustment benefits, the
mustering-out pay is $100 for
less than 60 days' service; $200
for more than 60 days; $300
when there is more than 60 days'
service which includes service
overseas.
Concert Tonight

tion, will be this Wednesday
evening at Waller hall, Willam
ette university campus.
The concert is in conjunction
with the syllabus and auditions
held in the Music hall last Fri
day and Saturday, sponsored by
the music teachers.
Starting at 7 o'clock and con
tinuing through to 8 o'clock,
with 15 -minute intermission,
and begining again at 8:15
o'clock and continuing until
9:15 o'clock, the program will
present students receiving high
ratings in the syllabus and au
ditions in formal concert.
Awards will be announced,
made possible by Joy Turner

students participating. There
were more than 60 who entered.
The event is an annual one
in San Francisco studying at
the School of Prophets, which is
conducted by the diocese of
California.

Salem airport and builders of
model planes Interested in join
ing the group are welcome to

The club, the oldest of its
type in Oregon, was organized
in 1938 by Elmer J. Roth of
2000 Market street who con
tinues as director of operations.
Members of the club enjoy
the privilege of having their
own flying field, a model car
race track, a radio transmitter
(for radio controlled models),
an engine starter, a pylon for
Indoor speed flying and a club
trailer for transporting their
models to and from contests.

escalators in the state, and they
are inspected every year.
