Jet Pilots Bail
Out at Six Miles
London W) Two surprised
jet fighter pilots, one British
and one American, bailed out
of their planes at six mile alti
tude and drifted into London's
joint exercises Monday between
the U.S. air force and Royal air
force.
After they parachuted, their
planes plunged into the ground
three miles apart.
The British pilot floated down
onto a suburban sidewalk and
reported, "someone chipped off
my tail."
The American flier, Capt.
Milton G. Whltford of the Blst
fighter wing, dodged chimney
pots and landed an arm's length
Lebanon Youths
Held in Fight
Lebanon Two local youths,
Dale Hetland and Calvin De
Gormett, are being held in the
county jail on a charge of as-
sault and battery. Their ball
has been fixed at $25 each.
Lebanon police were called
late Friday night to investigate
the story of a local girl who re
ported her escort and another
youth were attacked while the
three were parked in a gravel pit
near the river.
While the two boys reported
ly engaged in a battle with five
youths who appeared at the pit,
the girl made her way to the
highway and was picked up by
a passing motorist.
Hetland and DeGormett re
portedly are members of the
attacking party.

Manager of Coast Pear Bureau

named manager of the Oregon-Washington-California
Pear bu
reau. Stratmann, formerly manager
of the bureau's merchandising
division in New York, succeeds
R. A. Patterson who recently
resigned. E. R. Pooley, Hood
River, bureau president, said
Patterson's resignation was ef
fective July 1.
"Fresh winter pears have
achieved wider distribution, the
practice of ripening is being
followed by wholesalers and
fresh pear merchandising dem
onstration achieved' wide ac
claim of the food trade during
Patterson's six years as pear
bureau manager," Policy said
In announcing Stratmann's ap
pointment. The pear bureau authorized
continued research on frozen
pear concentrates; employment
of a full-time field representa
tive in Texas, and appointment
of a committee to work with a
container firm in the develop
ment of fibre shipping contain
ers. The bureau also reelected
Pooley president. Other offi
cers named included: J. W.
Hebert, Yakima, first vice pres
ident; J. A. Hodapp, Placer
ville, Calif., second vice presi
dent; Paul Seeley, Wenatchee,
third vice president; H. B. Mur
phy, Medford, fourth vice pres
ident; Stratmann,- secretary
treasurer; K. M. Furse, Port
land, assistant secretary, and
F. V. Warrington, Portland, as
sistant treasurer.
