Then Homer, the butler, was in
the room also, and Nick Walker
again, rain running off his face.
They carried Nancy out between
them. There was the sound of a
car motor running outside the main
entrance to the front hall.
Doctor Clark was saying, "You'd
better come with me, Karen." His
features were set-and grim. "We'll
get her to the hospital."
Johnny followed them Into the
hall.
He asked Clark urgently, "What
do you think, Doc?"
The doctor's voice was low as he
spoke. The words were for Johnny's
benefit only. "She hasn't a chance.
I doubt IX she lives until we get
there."
Doctor Clark paused Just an in
stant to look steadily at Johnny
Saxon. "Perhaps," he said softly
"it's just as well. This clftaas thing.1:
up wilhout a mess of publicity for
the family. No one need ever know
about her and Martin Smith. As
for shooting herself, accidently, we
can all vouch for that."
"Yes," said Johnny.
Kay was bringing her mother out
of the living room. She said, "She'd
better lie down. She's been through
so much." Kay's own voice was
trembling.
Johnny took Irene's arm. "I'll i
take her upstairs." he said quickly. !
He looked with concern at Kay's
young face. "Now stop thinking
about things. You're the one I'm
worried about. It's finished now."
He went up the stairs with Irene
Smith. He accompanied her into
the blue and white bedroom. She
was not nervous now. She was calm
and thoughtful.
In the room, Johnny looked at
her and said quietly, "That was
about the same way it happened
at the gun club that Saturday
night, wasn't it?"
"Yes," she said.
"You remember everything now?"
"Everything." She was very calm.
"The lights were turned off that
night. They were arguing. Nancy
had the gun. I grabbed her and we
struggled over it, just like a mo
ment ago."
Johnny said, "In the darkness,
you shot him."
"Yes," Irene firmly stated. "I shot
him. I loathed him. Even poor Kay
was finding out the things he did.
I'd warned him. I couldn't see Kay
hurt any more ..." .
Johnny said. "But Nancy's always
thought she did It?"
"I think so," Irene said quietly.
"She fainted, that night. Later, I
told her we had to get him out of
there . . . make It appear like an
accident. She had come there with
the gun, She intended to kill Mar
tin. She was frantic afterwards, and
utterly helpless."'
"What did you do?"
"I told her to go back lo the

in the hall.
J. T. Smith just called." he whis
pered quickly. "He's on his way out
from New York. Do you think we'll
get paid?"

amazement. "Can't you wait?"
'The hospital called too. It was

Johnny said, "So that winds up
things. We'll be leaving soon, after

started up the stairs slowly. He
looked back.
The doc's ears lifted un nnrl lir
followed. Moe ratted his nnwprful
shoulders. "I'm going to miss you,
pal," he said sadly.
In the living room. Johnnv smiled
ns he found Kay. She was waiting
for him. Her unusualy green eyes
were troubled.
Hey!" he said br cht v. "None
of that." He flung open one of the
terrace doors. He heard rain pat
tering on the tiles outside. The wind
had almost died.
Would you like to walk in the
rain?" he asked suddenly, grinning.

He took her hand and led her
quickly outside. "It makes you feel
fresh and alive,' he said cheerfully.
Kay caught some of his mood.
'Shouldn't you wear a hat. John
ny?"

He took her by the arm and they
swunp down along the driveway.
The rain pelted their faces and ran
down their cheeks. It was coo and
refreshing.

look young?"
