Churches in
Sharing Hour
"Christian compassion wrote a
life-saving and heart-warming
record in 1951, and should do
even better in 1952," says the
Christian Century editorially
concerning the "One Great Hour
of Sharing" movement which is
being participated in by Salem
churches.
The editorial continues in part:
"As the week of March 16-23
comes nearer, when another
One Great Hour of Sharing' will
be observed by the churches of
this favored land, it is only fair
that that record shall receive the
credit it deserves. During 1951
the 36 denominations cooperat
ing in Church World Service
chipped overseas 9,612,594
pounds of clothing, food and mis
cellaneous supplies, including
medicines. By American values,
these shipments are rated as
worth $3,901,985. That is a sub
stantial sum, but the goods may
be worth 10 or 20 times as much
where they are sent. For exam
ple, an overcoat weighing five or
six pounds would be counted
by C. W. S. as worth around $4,
but It would bring $80 in Pusan
If anybody could be found with
that much money. And who can
say what $5 worth of milk pow
der is really worth in the curren
cy of compassion when it gives
a growing child a supplementary
glass of milk each day for a
year?
"Every penny of funds" given
for human help is precious, so
we have good reason for report
ing to the last penny the money
Church World Service received
and disbursed in 1951. It was
$966,757.14. It went to help men,
women and especially children
in Korea, Japan, Okinawa, India,
Palestine and central Europe.
Through C. W. S. the churches
ent an additional $562,192 to the
World Council of Churches for
use in helping churches and ref
ugees in distress. Another $203,
949.22 was allocated to mission
aries abroad, who also carry on
relief, through the committee on
relief and reconstruction serv
ices of the division of foreign
missions of the National Council
of Churches. All together then
the gifts for human helpfulness
contributed by the churches
through Church World Service
last year totaled $5,635,603.36
an achievement which deserves
a hymn of gratitude in every
congregation in the land."
