Johnny's eyes had been on Nan
cy's face as the man made the
remark. The woman had sat down
In a chair near them and idly
picked up one of the books that
Moo Martin had been examining
in his hopeless quest for the miss
In? manuscript. Expression of her
eyes said that her thoughts had
drawn up sharply lor an instant;
she was not lookinz at the book
at all, but was absorbed in Nick
Walker's statement. The look that
swept briefly through her eyes puz
zled Johnnv Saxon.
He said, "Excuse me for a few
moments." He motioned toward
the terrace. "I'll talk to her."
Nick Walker picked up his pipe
nnd started toward the nauway,
"Meanwhile. I'll fix some drinks.
This is the butler's night off. What
we need are some Singapore Slings."
"Not a bad Idea." said Johnny
"Anythine with liquor in it will
be suitable."
Chuckling loudly, the big man
aisappearea.
"Mr. Saxon . . Nancy was
standing up. Her features looked
Ivory-white in the subdued light
of the room.
Johnnv Daused a moment.
"There's something I feel I
ought to tell you."
"Yes?"
She went on, "You'll probably
Iiear some things about Martin . . .
Irene's husband."
His eyebrows raised slightly in
a question.
"I mean, you'll hear that he was
, , . well, not thoughtful of Irene
, . . that he was living a life that
Rhe did not suspect, Someone's
bound to tell voii these thines."
He remembered Kay's remarks
this afternoon. He wondered what
this woman was tryinir to tell him,
"An investigator hears lots of
things. If I believed everything
I heard . . ."
"Don't believe what you hear
nbout Martin." Her voice had raised
s ichtlv. There was something un-
natural about her eyes. "He was a
fine man, I dont care what they
say. He did everything in the
world for his familv."
Her eyes went past him and
sought out the mantel a Dove a
huge open fireplace. "That's his
picture . . . the one at the left."
Johnny walked over to the fire
place. Within a silver frame was
a picture of a handsome-looking
man with sensitive, sharply de
fined features. It was Martin
Smith, the murdered man. Johnny
had oftentimes seen the million
aire's picture in the newspapers,
but he hadn't realized the man
was so young-looking.
Johnny merely glanced at the
picture, then turned abruptly to
Nancy, who had come behind him.
Perhaps she had expected him to
study the photograph for a mo
ment longer. Anyway, she seemed
Unprepared for his move.
She, too, had been looking up
at the photograph. He was amazed
by the expression that had come
over her face.
Apparently she had been smll
lns up at the photograph. But
what Johnny saw was somewhat
awesome. Half of the woman's
features smiles. The other half of
the face was a partially twisted
gvlmnce. It was sort of a fright
ful comblnfttlon that gave Johnny
Saxon a distinct shock until he
realized what was wrong.
The left side of Nancy England's
features were affected by partial
paralysis.
And she knew he had observed
this.
Nancy turned away quickly,
murmured something inaudible
nnd hurried toward the center hall
way. She moved with a tense man
ner that was visible In the straight
ness of her slim shoulders.
Johnny Saxon stood there a
moment, again looking up at the
man's photograph in the silver
frame. He had made an astound
ing dLscovcry.
Johnny closed the screen door
quietly and let his eyes grow ac
customed to the sudden darkne.1--outside.
Moe Martin's stocky figure
Appeared out of the night and he
whispered. "She's over there." He
made a motion indicating the far
end of the terrace-veranda.

Johnny's partner. He came over
and shoved his big head against
the investigator's leg and waited
lor his ears to be scratched.
"Asleep?" asked Johnny quiet
ly. "I dunno. You talk to her and
she sits with her eyes closed and
doesn't say anything. It's like she
was in a trance."
"It's a form of shock," said John
ny. "Well. If we can't find out any
thing, how're we gonna get any
place? We'll Ret taken off the case
and then where'U we be? Broke
again!"
"Stop worrying," Johnny quiet
ly told his friend. "I've already
found out something."
"You mean . . ." he started.
"I found out why Nancy never
married Nick Walker."
Interest died in Moe's eyes. "The
trouble with you. Johnny, is that
you never take anything seriously.
After all, Kay says It was only
luck you didn't get shot out there
on the harbor tonight . . ."
"I took that seriously. I might
nave arowneo.
"Look," whispered Moe Martin,
disturbed, "it's funny Nick Walker
drove around that shore road Just
at the time the shooting hap
pened . . ."
"What kind of a car does he
own."
"A station wagon." Moe Martin
pointed toward the opposite end
of the terrace. "It's parked out
there in the driveway."
"Stay here," Johnny directed.
"I'll be right back."
The wide front seat was of tan
colored leatherold. There was a
flashlight, a pipe and a box of
matches in the middle of the seat.
Johnny picked up the light, back
ed out of the car and opened the
door to the roomy rear compart
ment. Snapping on the light, he
saw that the station wagon was
apparently used for hauling farm
supplies. There was the smell of
oats and hay. Particles of grain
were scattered on the flooring.
Two small, square, yellow-colored
boxes caught Johnny's eye. Each
contained 16-gauge shotgun shells.
One box was half empty. There was
no gun In the car.
