CHAPTER 23
How oould she stop Abigail from
going to Dean? For Abigail's sake,
no one else's.
Tomorrow would come much too
soon lor Marcla. She knew she
-would lie awake the rest of the
night, waiting for it. And when
it came she still would not know
what to do.
It seemed to her as though hours
had passed she had long been
hearing Abigail's quiet, steady
breathing which meant that her;
sister had fallen almost Immediately
into deep, untroubled slumber
when the phone began to ring.
Marcia hastily slipped out of
bed to answer it before Abigail
was awakened. When she heard
the voice at the other end of the
wire she was reminded of another
night, which now seemed long ago..
For it was Manning Kornoff, the
"mad" Russian. And he said much
the same thing he had that other
time.
"I want you to deliver a message
to Abigail for me," he said. "I
want you to tell her that I cannot
stand by and endure more. Please
tell her good-bye for me."
"Please hold the wire," Marcla
said. "I'll call her. Abigail is asleep. :
But I'll call her, if you'll wait,
please."
"It's no use. Do not call her now.
Morning will be tune enough."
"No, IH call her now. I am sure
she will want to talk with you."
"Thank you, no." His voice re
mained firm, final. It was far too
controlled for Manning, who was
given to dramatics. "Tell her that
I loved her far. far too much and
goodbye. That's all."
Marcia heard the decisive click
of the receiver at the other end.
She jiggled the hook on her own
phone, but brought no response.
She did not know why, but she
felt panicky. It was almost as
though a deep shadow had darkened
everything, casting a silent ominous
spell.
She could not go back to bed.
She wished she could waken Abi
gail. Yet she hated to. Her sister
had slept through the conversa
tion, Marcia carefully having
pulled the door to the bedroom
shut. Abigail did not stir when
Marcia tiptoed back into the room.
No, it would be a pity to waken
her, Marcia decided. She would
have to do something without her
sister's help.
There was an indexed pad on
ihe telephone stand she should
have remembered it before. Thumb-1
lng through it, Marcia found Man-!
ning's number, and beneath it the!
address where he lived.
She dialed the number; she could
hear the bell . ringing, then ring
ing and ringing again. The fear
some panic within her grew. The
silence at the other end of the line
'Was a bad as the quiet that seemed
to be closing in on Marcia.
She felt she dared not wait long
er, keep trying the phone. She
dressed as quickly, quietly as she
could. Still Abigail did not stir.
Perhaps she ought to leave a note
in case her sister did waken and
become alarmed at Marcia's ab
sence. Bub Marcia still felt there
was not time; she felt some urgency
hurrying her.
She was lucky in getting a cruis
ing cab at the corner. She gave the
man the address. She did- not
notice that the man looked her
over curiously, carefully. But he
respectfully repeated the address
she had named and reached to slam
the door tight.
The big city was asleep, the Ave
nue deserted. Marcia never had
seen It like this, without Its color
and glamour. Why, it was as peace
ful as Elmwood! Perhaps under
neath the big show it was not so
different, its people not so dif
ferent, either. They Just seemed
different on the surface. Abigail
was like that. Tonight she had re
vealed that she was soft and warm
and loving beneath the polished
sheen.

wait for you?" The driver looked
around, slain e un his passenger
carefully again. He often drove
odd pssengers at odd hours of the
mgnt. women some tunes, a well
as men. But this girl was onlv a
kid. Too young, fragile, to be out
alone.
'No. thank vou." Marcia nald
him. "Thank you very much for
bringing me. Good night."
No one had ever said that to
the man. Good night, as though
he were a special person, a friend.
People talked to him, of course.
Taxi' drivers got lonesome. They
often started the talk rolling, but
they never brought it to too oer-
sonal a basis.
Tnere was something about the
kid's face ... He decided he
would wait anyway. A little while.
Couldn't do no harm. She might
come out, not be so lucky to find
a cab right off. She oughn't go
walking about trying to find a
cab by herself after midnight, not
a kid like that.
The driver had two kids of his
own; boys. But he had always
wanted a girl, too.
Marcia was relieved to hear mu
c. soft music, from inside Man
ning's door. It wns a huge relief
after all that stillness. The re
cording that was playing was "Now
Is the Hour."
She remembered, with & nana
of nostalgia, when she had heard
that song before. With Tommy,
back home. She wished Tommy
were here, beside her now. He
had said, Remember, Marcia, if
you ever need me just send for
me. sue needed nun now. she
wished she could send for him.
She did not know whv she should
think of Tommy, except for the
song, which was beginning now, as
it had that other time, to play
over once more. She should have
been thinking of Dean. Or of Man-i
ning Kornoff. History reneating it-1

Dean she , need not think about
now.
There was no response to her
ring or knock: trrobablv neither
could be heard with the record
machine going. Marcia could not
leave without going in. She tried
the knob; it turned beneath her
touch, the door swinging open. )
The small living room was ablaze
with lights, but it was emDtv. Ex-1
cept for the soft music this room
seemed to hold that same ominous
silence, that same dark shadow. 1

Tough for Grandma
' Los Angeles ) Grandmother has it tough these days.
"She finds there is little housework and there is no one to

of his productive period, and so he feels happy and eon
