Red Sub Fleet
Grows to 300
Washington W) Russia's sub
marine fleet is a potent war
force, says Secretary of the Na
vy Kimball, and has grown from
50 to 300 or 400 compared with
the U.S. Navy's gain from 70 to
100.
While the Soviets have "no
substantial surface fleet" their
expanded underwater service in
a war "would constitute a very
real threat," Kimball said Sun
day on the CBS television pro
gram "See It Now."

Delayed Blast
Kills Six Men
Sacramento, Calif. VP) The
delayed - action explosion of a
crippled Air Force bomber atop a
crowded guard house killed six
men and injured 61 at Mather
Air Base Saturday.
Ironically, the 10-minute inter
val between crash-landing and
explosion made it possible for the
B-25's injured three-man crew to
get out but enlarged the scope
of the tragedy.
In that interval, rescuers
wormed their way from the shat
tered roof into the guard house,
seeKing to pull out men impris
oned under fallen beams. Then
a fiery blast enveloped the one
story barracks in flaming gaso
line. That did it. Completely de
molished the building!" said
Chaplain Howard B. Scholten
one of the rescuers.
One of the five identified dead
was a fire fighter, atop the
plane when it exploded. The
other four were engaged in res
cue work.

Blaze Damages
4 Corners Shop
Four Corners Volunteer
firemen answered a call at 5:30
p.m. Saturday to the J. H.
Lewis Cabinet Shop 690 N. Lan
caster Dr.
Firemen confined the dam
age to the front end of the shop.
A strong wind hampered their
efforts and fanned the flames
so they could be seen at a dis
tance. Mr. Lewis had been
working in the shop until
about 30 minutes before the
fire. He discovered a bright
glow on returning from a near
by filling station.
He was able to get his car out
after calling the fire depart
ment but not until some fire
damage was done to the up
holstery. Fire started in a wood bin
close to a heater. Damage was
estimated at $1000 and is not
covered by insurance. Fireman
L. A. Morris, Four Corner Vari
ety partner, suffered painful
injury to his left hand requir
ing first aid.
