North Pole 500th Time
Fairbanks, Alaska, Aug. 22 W) A pole-hopping B-29 landed
at Eielson air force base today to complete the 500th flight over
the North Pole by the 58th Weather Reconnaissance squadron.
Special ceremonies marked the completion of No. 500.

and stars is not long enough to
cause a plane to get lost.
The squadron also has found

Three Areas Set
Aside for Deer
Hunting Archers
Portland, Ore., Aug. 22 M.R
Archers will have a chance to
try their skill at killing deer and
elk in three areas of Oregon this
fall.
The Oregon state game com
mission has set aside the Mt.
Emily game refuge in Union and
Umatilla counties, the Canyon
creek refuge in Grant county
and the Clatskanie area in Co
lumbia county for special bow
and arrow hunting seasons.
The regulations require that
all archers have a special permit
for hunting in any archery area.
A report card attached to the
permit must be returned to the
commission within 30 days after
close of the season. The bow and
arrow hunters also must have
regular deer andor elk tags in
possession.
The game must be taken by
means of long bow and barbless
broad arrow. Minimum weights
and sizes require use of a bow

general manager of the Montreal
Alouettes Canadian football
team, agreed today that some
national league owners "are
barkin' at me," but that lt didn't
hurt his sleep any.
'Sure, I've a few letters here
from the Giants and the Yanks,"
the self-styled New Jerseyite
laughed, tapping a desk drawer.
"But the old guys we take from
the States have to be unsigned
by their old clubs. What's more,
we're only allowed seven Amer
icans per team in this league and
anybody who tried to compare
it to the Pasquel Brothers thing
in baseball is crazy."
Among stateside players who
have fallen for Hayman's ren
dition of "Alouette" this year
are George Ratterman, still try
ing to get disentangled from the
Ted Collins organization; Gene
(Choo-Choo) Roberts, ex-giant;
John Yonaker, another Collins
alumnus; Bill Chambers and
Frank Aschcnbrenner.
Glenn Dobbs at Regina, Allen
Dekdebrun at Toronto, Alton
Baldwin at Ottawa and Martin

have gone north of the border.
"Someday," Hayman went on,
'I hope we can get together with
Bert Bell of the NFL and work
out our differences. In the mean
time, it beats me how he thinks
his league has a right to draft
any kid in the world as soon as
he gets out of college."
