Reluctantly Mrs. Juonahan let

that snownakes are like silver ar
rows stabbing at you out or the
darkness? Now I bet you didn't."
"They're arrows that will kill you
all rignt."
She heaved a deep sigh that shook
her mountainous ligure. "Pat, you
have no poetry In you at all. And
there's no fear ot snow kUung the
likes o' me. Its starvation will do
that. These doctors and their diets.
A fine one I am at my time ot life
to start thlnkinx about my figure."
"Now don't start complaining
about that. You've lost weight
and "
"Lost weight Indeed? I've gained
it. I never used to think of it
at all except when I was fool
Buougli to try to walk around, but
now I think about it all the time.
My stomach growls at me and wants
to know If my throat is cut."
"You said that yesterday,, and
'the day before' he added impres
sively. She laughed, "I intend going on
saying it till I wear you all down.
I told rather Toughey so today.
Lottie ain't here to pester me any
more, so I say "
. "Grandma! Grandma 1"
. There, was no mistaking Tuff y's
shrill cry outside the window. Tne
next moment he burst into the room
and flung himself into her arms,
shouting wildly. .
"We're home I Mom is comln'
down the block. I can stay with
you till Monday when I gotta go
back to school. Pat, I want a ride."
- Pat caught him up and held him
high over his head, laughing up at
him and quite as excited as he was.
The fat woman flung eager ques
tions that were lost in hilarious
laughter. Lottie appeared in the
doorway and poised.
"What noise 1 Terence, behave
yourself. Pat. put him down at once.
He Is crazy enough. He ran all the
way down the street ahead of me."
Mrs. Monahan chortled. "Stop
complaining and come give me a
kiss. Then you can tell me all
about California."
Tuffy caught the word and roar
ed information. "Rosalie ain't out
there any more. She was no good
bo they fired her. Tell 'em Ma."
"I told you I'd whip you If you
-said that. . I "
Mrs. Monahan was sitting very
still. Pat put the boy down gently
on a chair and faced vthe girl.
"What Is it you know about
Rosalie?"
Lottie tossed her fur coat onto
a chair carelessly. "Can't you even
give me a chance to catch my breath
after I've been away for- three
months?" . .
"Where 'is Rosalie? What hap
pened to her?"
"And where Is Joe?" cried the
bnv. "We came bv the flrehouse
but he wasn't there. The captain
showed me Joe's -medal and "
. "Tr. wasn't r.hA p.antflin. It "
Pat gave her a little shake. "Lot
tie, I'm asking you a question.
Where is Rosalie?"
She pulled away from him an
grily. "Rosalie, Rosalie. That's all
I hear. You might ask me how I
am when ylou haven't seen me in
months."
Mrs. Monahan was quick. "We
don't need to ask about you. It's
plain you haven't changed even
a little bit."
, "What do, you mean by that?"
' "You're ' still as exasperatin' as
ever. Can't you answer a simple
question? Where Is Rosalie? Did
you see her?"
"Yes, I did." Lottie snapped the
words. "She tried to act like the
queen of Hollywood. You'd think
she owned the place."
Pat grinned. "Maybe she does
by now. She has a way with her,
you know.
Lottie laughed shrilly. "She has
nothing. She was tried in a cheap
picture ana tnev cut ner uut. one
was no good. Nobody would have
her. You wanted to know so bad
and now you do. 'mats wny sne
never wrote you a line. Rex Hall
'dumped her when he saw the first
rushes. He's no fool. He escaped
her clutches all right. It was in
the paper out there. He's engaged
to someone else. He doesn't know
where she Is nor want to know."
Lpttie paused, breathless. Pat and
her mother sat number by her news.
Pat moistened his lips and spoke
very humbly. ,
. "She must have married that
Wayne she was here with."
Lottie snorted. "She most cer
tainly did not. He married Wini
fred Carlton, who is rich and so
jolly that the papers have always
called her the laughing heiress.
' Rosalie fooled him into taking her
out there, and paying her fare but
that was all. He didn't seam an
much here somehow, but once I
bui mere i realized how important
he was. She couldn't fool many peo
