Reception Set
For Mrs. Starr
Mrs. Clara L. Starr is to be honored
on her 90th birthday with an informal
reception Saturday afternoon, July 28,
in the Carrier room of the First Meth
odist church. Friends are to call between
3 and 6 o'clock.
Arranging the affair are Mrs. Starr's
daughter, Mrs. C. D. Morse of Salem
and her son, Chester H. Starr of Los An
geles, Calif. Mrs. Morse and Mr. Starr
are to be in an informal reception line
with the honoree to greet the guests.
Mrs. Starr was born near Lebanon and
Is a pioneer in Linn county. She is the
wife of the late Dr. I. W. Starr and
sister of the late C. P. Bishop. Mrs.
Starr has been queen of the Linn coun
ty pioneer group for being one of the
oldest members of the group.
Assisting with pouring and serving at
the reception will be Mrs. Elmer J,
Stanard, Mrs. Mason Bishop, Mrj. M. C.
Findley and Mrs. B. T. Kumier, all of
Salem; Mrs. Mason Stanard, Mrs. Clar

day afternoon for Mack Lowery on his
fourth birthday at the home of his grand
mother, Mrs. H. G. Maison. Mrs. Kelton
Lowery and three children arrived from
Jackson, Miss., recently to visit Mrs.
Lowery's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. G.
Maison.

Organist for the nuptials will be Jose
phine Sanders and soloists, Helen Beals
and Daniel Barron.
The bride's father will give her in
marriage. She has chosen a gown of
snow white satin trimmed with fine
handmade Irish lace. The dress is fash
ioned with over-shoulder cuff of white
iatin, and long sleeves. A crown trim
med with seed pearls holds the finger
tip veil which is trimmed with lace to
match the gown. The bride will carry
cascade bouquet of three orchids and
tephanotls with large white satin bow.
Miss Kathryn Santee, sister of the
bridegroom, is to be maid of honor,
wearing a soft green gown and a head
dress of carnations with green dolley
background. She is to carry a nosegay
of orchids and carnations with dolley
background and green satin ribbons.
Bridesmaids will be Miss Doreen Bis
ceglia of Tigard In chiffon pink, Miss

hold its annual picnic at the home of
the Charles McAllisters, Thursday, July
2(1, at 12:30 p.m.

Albert of LaGrande, in ice blue. They
will carry nosegays of Vanda orchids
and cnrmitiniis will) trim to match their
formuls and wear marquisette mitts in
matching colors. All the gowns are of
marquisette over taffeta.
David Simpson, younger brother of
the bride, and Doreen Worthlnglon of
Salem are ringbearer and flower girl.
They are to be dressed as miniature
bride and bridegroom.
Donald Simpson and Harry Santee,
Jr., younger brothers of the bride and
. bridegroom are junior ushers and will
escort the mothers to their seats.
Best man will be Kenneth Hay of Ore
gon City and ushers are Harold Goshoen
of Salem, Gilbert Frey, Robert Styles
and Bud Jeffries of Portland.
The bride and bridegroom's mothers
will wear matching dinner gowns of
soft aqua and corsages of Vanda orchids.
A reception is arranged for the re
ception hall in the church. The bride's
aunt, Delia Jeffries, will cut the cake,
assisted by the bride's cousin, Miss
Mary Lou Mayer. Pouring will be: Mrs.
Roy Worthington, Mrs. Harold Jeffer
ies, and Miss Jean Schwartz. Miss Joyce
Robinson and Miss Sharon Simpson,
sister of the bride, will attend the guest
book.
A wedding trip to Canada is planned
following which the couple will make
their home in Los Angeles, Calif., where
both will attend Life Bible college. For
going away the bride has chosen an
orchid suit with white accessories and
the orchid from her bridal bouquet.

The bride-elect, a student at SaJem
high school, is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. C. R. Thompson. Mr. Loveless is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chavis. He
is stationed with the navv at Norfolk,
Va.
Arriving this .week-end to be at the
home of the George A. Browns is Miss
Helen Gordon of Barnesboro, Pa. Miss
Gordon, a sister of Mrs. Brown, taught
at Chemawa Indian schpol a year ago
and plans to teach there again the com
ing year. She spent a few days in Spo
kane, Wash., en route to Salem.
Visitor expected at the E. I. Foster
home next week-end is their daughter.
Mrs. Clyde G. Herr, Jr. (Jean Foster) of
Watsonville, Calif. She will be in Salem
until the first of August when the Fos

to make their home at Watsonville.
Miss Gertrude Acheson, executive di
rector of the YWCA. is spending the
week in Portland with her sister, Mrs.
George A. Ferret. Accompanying Miss
Acheson is another sister, Dr. Edna Ache
son, of Chicago, 111., who is visiting in
Salem for the summer.
Final arrangements are being made
today for the Salem Art association "Art
Fair," which is to be given at the
Morningside home of the Walter Kirks,
Sunday afternoon and evening. The in
terested public is invited to call between
the hours of 3 and 9 o'clock to view
the many exhibits which will be on
display in the guest house and on the
patios and terrace at the Kirk home.
General chairmen from the Art associ
ation are Mrs. Kirk, Mrs. William E.
Anderson and Mrs. F. W. Poorman.
Works of members of the Creative Art
group will be on display and several of
the members are to be present during
the afternoon and evening to do sketch
ing and painting. Among those at work
will be Mrs. Ida Nestell, David Duni
way and Mrs Elva Stanton.
Hand woven articles are to be exhib
ited by the Weavers guild under the
direction of Mrs. Frederick Hill Thomp
son, Mrs. Hugh Morrow, Mrs. Breyman
Boise. Mrs. William H. Burghardt and
Mrs. George Bagnall.
Gaiety Hill Garden club members
are planning arrangements of cut flow
ers, vases and garden tools. Members
assisting are Mrs. Lester Barr, Mrs. J.

A coke and refreshment concession
will be another feature of the fair spon
sored by the Spinsters club with Miss

No admission is being charged but a
volunteer offering will be taken.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene I. Foster left by
train this morning for Seattle. Wash.,
where they will visit Mrs. Foster's
nephew and family, Mr. and Mrs. B. M.
Stevens and two children. They will
spend, the week-end there and on Mon
day take a boat trip to Victoria, B.C.,
and the San Juan Islands. The Fosters
plan to be gone a week,

Leaving for Camp Westwind, YWCA
summer camp at Three Rocks, Ore., next
Wednesday to spend a week will be
Misses Laura Parsegian, Thelma Cook,
Shirley Jones, and Janet Mayfield.
Physical examinations are given for
the YWCA girls, Camp Fire Girls and
Girl Scouts each Thursday evening dur
ing camp sessions at the YWCA. The
examinations are sponsored by the com
munity chest agencies and the medical
society.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. P. M. Hammond and Mr. Oliver

ver, all of Portland. The engagement of
the couple was announced in February
on the Willamette university campus.
Both were graduated from Willamette
university in June.

of the birth of a daughter, Katrin Lou
ise, to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar C. Christensen,
Jr. (Shirlee Marie Reimann), Thursday,
July. 19. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Leo Reimann and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar
C. Christcnsen, all of Salem. The baby is
the first grandchild in the two families.
