i Famous Scone Stone Stolen
From Coronation Throne
London, Dec. 26. VP) Thieves stole the priceless stone of scone
from Westminster Abbey yesterday and damaged the coronation
throne while tugging the 336 pound standstone block across the
floor.
The stone, whose legend goes back into the mists of time, was
an important fixture in the cor-s-
. onation of British kings. Scot
tish in origin, it symbolized the
union of the crowns of England
and Scotland in the 17th cen
tury. . Known as the stone of "des
tiny," it rests beneath the coro
nation chair. The stone bears no
Inscription and its role In mod
ern coronations is symbolic. In
the old days most Scottish kings
were crowned at Scone and the
stone was used for the cere
mony. According to legend the stone
groans when the rightful sover
eign sits on it, but remains silent
beneath a conqueror.
Police said they were search
ing for a man and woman seen
in the vicinity of the Abbey
yesterday in a small car. Spec
ulation was that the theft was
the work either of pranksters or
of members of the home rule
movement in Scotland. A small
group of Scots have been urging
the complete separation of Eng
land and Scotland.
On the assumption the theft
might have been the work of
Scottish national extremists,
Lancashire county police threw
up road blocks on highways
leading to the Scottish border.
They stopped and searched the
interiors of ears driving north.
The home of Canon Adam
Box, a member of the Abbey
staff, said the stone last was
seen safely in its place shortly
after midnight.
It was believed the thieves
attended the last service on
Christmas eve, and at its close
concealed themselves In one of
the .royal chapels to wait their
chance to move the relic.
The theft was discovered by
fireman Andy Hislop while he
was making his last rounds.
The coronation throne had
been dragged several yards from
its position in the bottom of
the throne, and a large splinter
was torn from the leg of the
throne.
The stone, leaving deep marks
on masonry and woodwork, then
was dragged through the south
screen door of the high altar and
around the south transept to the
poet's corner door.
Scotland Yard detectives and
members of the Abbey staff end
ed their search of the Abbey as
the congregation assembled for
Christmas morning services.
The stone, known to be at
least 1,100 years old. was
brought to Westminister in 1296
from Scotland. It came from the
old Abbey of Scone in Perth
shire, where the ancient Scottish
kings were crowned.
The stone occupies a place un
der the coronation chair in West
minister Abbey. By its position
there it symbolizes the union of
the English and Scottish crowns
in the Seventeenth century.
For 400 years the stone was
used in the crowning ceremony
for Scottish kings. In January,
1949, an anonymous letter writ
er threatened to damage or steal
the stone unless it was returned
to Scotland. A police guard was
maintained for 60 hours on that
occasion but nothing happened.
The stone figured in the cor
onation of Britani's present mon
arch, George VI, in 1937. Dur
ing World War II when Britain
was threatened by invasion, the
stone was buried in the Abbey
and a chart showing its position
was sent to Canada.
It is a priceless relic, compar
able to the original copy of the
Declaration of Independence in
the United States.
The stone is a rectangular
block of pale yellow sandstone
and weighs 336 pounds.
Called by Marines
McMinnville Mr. and Mrs.
Edward L .Clark, Jr., and son
Timothy, left recently for Ocean
side, Calif., where he reported
for duty as first lieutenant in
the marine corps. Lt. Clark
joined the law firm of Marsh,
Marsh and Dashney In McMinn
ville on August 15. On Decem
ber 12, just a few months after
his acceptance into the Oregon
State Bar association, he was
admitted to practice law in the
United States federal court, dis
trict of Oregon. He is believed
to be one of the youngest at-
torneys so honored. Following
reporting for duty at Camp Pen
dleton, the Clarks will be guests
of friends in Inglewood, Cali
fornia, until after holidays.
