'Good Will Toward Men'

Washington, Dec. 21 (U.R) I have evidence to prove that we
still practice "good will toward men" in America.
In Washington, and elsewhere.
Here in the capital, a group of auto supply firms has done a
daring thing. Instead of passing out gifts to their customers like
they used to, the outfits are tan
ing the money and buying food
and clothing for the needy.
John Carden, who runs a
Washmobile concern, says that
the idea started last year when
a couple of companies decided
to stretch their necks out.
'
"We put ourselves on a spot,"
he said. "You know that custo
mers can run you into the red
by taking their business some
place else."
But, surprisingly enough, it
didn't work out that way.
The two 3irms last year sent
their patrons cards instead of
presents and explained what
ihey were up to. The customers
phoned and wrote in that they
thought it was a swell idea,

' r supply outfits have joined the
parade. And a lot of customers,
instead of expecting and get
ting gifts, are adding money and
presents to the pool.
Another small group around
town is quietly doing good by
practicing the. "do-unto-others'-slogan.
It's called, properly,
"The Golden Rule" club.
It's an informal organization
of six fellows and their wives
who have palled around togeth
er since they were kids.
A couple of years ago, one
member of the crowd ran across
an invalid at Emergency hospi
tal. He talked his friends into
sponsoring a dance to raise
money for the patient.

after that, another member saw
a piece in the papers i.bout a
little boy who was hurt in an
auto smash-up. There was an
other benefit dance, and there
have been many since. ;
A Christmas time approached,
the folks put their heads togeth
er plus all the money they
could spare.
On Sunday night a few needy
folks in Washington will get
Christmas baskets.
In Duiant, Okla., Miss Ora
O Riley, a native Choctaw In
dian, has been working since
1939 on a worthy project she
thought up all by herself.

every school, business office, and
public building. This dream has
almost come true."
Once Durant is 100 per cent
for the idea, Miss O Riley hopes
that the thing spreads around
the country.
'There should be something
done to call our attention to
what the occasion is," she said
"The season of the year has
been commercialized until the
real purpose of celebrating the
birth of Christ is lost entirely.1
Miss O Riley also thinks it
woula be swell if each" town
would sponsor a "Christ the
Princs of Peace" Christmas parade.
"Then'maybe' some day in our
time the world - would have
peace," the Indian woman said.
